1951 Bowman #1 Whitey Ford (finally!)

I didn't think I'd ever own the Ford rookie in any decent condition, because of the extreme popularity of '51 Bowman and Whitey being #1. On certain tough cards I lowered my min. grade to PSA 5 and finally I was able to acquire a nice example.
BTW, with such a large percentage of today's players being black or latino, do you think anyone could get away with "Whitey" these days?

Whitey nowadays?? No way, which is too bad. It had nothing to do with Ford being white. Or Ashburn for that matter.

<< <i>I disagree. I believe Whitey Herzog still goes by Whitey, and I never once ever thought about the potentially racial tone of the name. >>
Yeah, but Ford, Herzog and Lockman date back to a different era. Heck, go back a little further in our history and you can hear Cab Calloway sing about "picaninny days" in reference to cotton workers. White people got a kick out of hearing a black man sing that.
I used to think Whitey referred to the color of one's hair, or perhaps implying the wisdom of years even if the hair wasn't white. But Ed Ford got his nickname while still a very young man. I wonder what "Whitey" meant in those days. Certainly in the late '60s and '70s it meant something else.

<< <i>I think there is a baseball player named Coco. I think his name is Coco Crisp. No kidding. >>
And he's a pretty good player for the indians...one of the reasons why they traded matt lawton to the pirates...he played very well in the 2nd half of last season and is now a fixture for the indians outfield.

<< <i>Nice card jr. I have a 7 that isn't that nice. Corners are a little better but the color on yours is great. >>
Wow. Could I sent mine to Aloof Sports Authenticators and cross over to ASA 7.5?
Seriously, my corners are not quite there for EX-MT, so PSA got it right. I'd love to see your 7.

gross
And as long as we have the Washington Redskins, I think Whitey will be OK.
Anyways, that's a nice Ford. Strong centering really can be nicer too look at than sharp corners.
