    hey Ray

i used to feel like that until i attended the 2003 ANA and changed gears. my goals are now better, my purchases are more disciplined and i hang on to things for a shorter period and accept a loss a little less grudgingly. i'm in the process now of sorting through the "junk pile" to get things organized for some club auctions, BST listings and clearance sales at eBay. it's been about a two year process but my holdings have a clear sense and my goals are much more attainable as a result.

  • I'm finding more and more I'm spending my time on hunting for reasonably-priced, no-problem, circulated seated material. There are dates that are deceptively tough in all the series. These are coins that aren't valued that much more according to the price guides, but try as you might, you never seem to find them offered for sale. I reserve the later series for "thank you" purchases (and hole-plugging sprees when I get frustrated). For the moderns, I search rolls and sort pocket change. I'm really more interested in the 19th century stuff. Oh, and I buy a few gold coins every year, usually the smaller denominations--dollars, quarter and half eagles. There's no strategy to that.

The result is something that looks like a well-organized hoard of junk silver and commodity coins with a few really attractive pieces thrown in to break the monotony. I like having a really nice example of each series. It's like a type set embedded within the collection. The collection is really more disciplined than it looks at first glance, and I'm more interested in the process than the result anyway.image
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.
