Well, ironically, Country does not matter, date and eye appeal matter.

Often when I speak to others about my collection (Non-collectors) they have simple questions like "What is your oldest coin" I would like to fufill there question with a cool answer image

    Sound crazy?

Might you a picture or two and a ballpark of what you would like to fetch for the piece?

There are many German and Austrian coins from the 1600s and 1700 which are inexpensive, even in high grade. Usually these are small silver coins.

    Here are two examples:

    image
A 1670 Austria, Breslau mint, silver 3 kreuzer featuring Leopold the Hogmouth. This one was $150, but you can pick up lower grade uncs for ~$70 and AUs for ~$40.

A 1766 German State of Frankfurt silver 4 pfenning. I believe this coin cost about $45.

Sorry, that coin is not for sale. It's the best of the type I've ever seen.

However, since you want an older coin how about this one:

If the boss approves PM me your address and I'll mail it out.

I know exactly where you're coming from. That was my very first coin from the 1700s and I bought it just to have something from that century. Since I now have many coins that old it seems like good karma to pass it along to someone else with the same interest. Sometime after buying that coin my primary interest became pre 1806 Austrian and German stuff so be careful!

    Neat Idea Mrpaseo

Its a good way to go about answering "whats your oldest coin?"

Its strange how most non collectors always seem to ask that question first when they find out u collect....

Ray you can go to a local show or coin shop, go through a box and pick up a large Irish or British copper from the 1600's that looks nice for less then ten bucks.

Our local show is next week, if you have an idea of what you are looking for I will go through the World Coin guys boxes and books and find ya sumptin nice.

Ray, you can find many really old coins for very little money. I've seen bronze Judean Prutah's (the Biblical "Widow's Mites") for less than $30 which are from the 103 BC to 76 BC era; bronze Byzantine Folles from 400 AD to 1100 AD (+/-) for $5 to $50 depending on condition.

If old silver appeals to you, some (not much) British hammered stuff (particularly from Henry III) is pretty reasonable. I have one that is VF or better that cost me $50. It's from the 1247 to 1272 era.
