Each person should PM me their address and their choice of a prize. Please list two alternate choices in case your first choice has already been taken.

Thank you all for entering.

Cheers, Richard.
PS--More contests will follow.

I have four coins to give away as follows: NGC MS64 1953-D Roosie with nice toning, NGC MS62 1946-S Roosie with nice album toning, 2 1978-P IKEs graded by an off-brand grading company as MS66 and MS67 clearly overgraded by 2 and 3 points, respectively. The two IKEs were bought as an experiment. There is also a 5th bonus coin that will remain nameless for the time being.

Here are the contest rules.

1) Enter by replying to this thread.

2) When you reply, you must describe what you would consider to be the perfect dollar coin. Of course, dollar series that have already been struck are out. So, for example, if you envision a dollar series with all the presidents on them, state that and if you have a picture that has been designed or one that you can design, please show it. The designs do not have to be your own and they do not have to be "new". If you know of one from the 1800's and you like it, post it.

3) Depending on the final number of entries, I may give all the coins to one person, or divide them up upon the top entries.

Cheers, Richard.

  • Well, if it is to be a circulation coin to come back to life as in the size of a Morgan- I could see the obverse showing the twin towers with the sun rising above it. The reverse would be that of the eagle of an morgan holding in talons the flag draped over the eagles nest perched on the side of a mountain.

no pics designer I'm not- but I have imagination.

My dream dollar would be maybe the size of a half dollar, bimetal, two toned, Statue of Liberty on the obverse because she stands for what this country is all about, and an eagle in flight on the reverse.

I would put several different design dollar coins into circulation portraying America's scenic natural wonders, such as National Parks. A coin depicting Yosemite, the Smokies, Everglades, Petrified Forest, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, etc ... there are lot of great images there to be interpreted on a coin if one can convince the Mint to be more bold and imaginative than the generally putrid State Quarter series.

Great design ideas! Keep them coming! imageimage
  • Ms. Liberty would definately come back... personally, I like Kneass' Ms. Liberty the best, but since you said coins that have been struck are out.......

Ms. Liberty facing right on the Obverse. She would have long flowing hair, similar to Flowing Hair Dollars, but more stylized and curly like, and a headband reading "LIBERTY"... the Reverse would be a smaller eagle in a soaring position, over a mountain and forest area, with the word "FREEDOM" around the bottom of the reverse.

  • Well, I had this neat idea for a coin to use which would have a nice representation of Lady Liberty on the front and on the back would be a sketch of Ellis Island with a large number of immigrants waiting to enter the USA. In the sky would be an eagle flying away towards the sun. The front would say 'United States of America' across the top, and the date would be on the bottom. In God We Trust would be written on a banner trailing from Lady Liberty's torch. On the back it would say 'E Pluribus Unum' and the denomination 'One Dollar'. I was going to sketch out a rough design, but couldn't find one of Liberty. I then did a search on google only to come up with an article here at PCGS about a Statue of Liberty Commemerative coin from 1986 that was pretty much what I was thinking of. Lol. Looks like someone already had my idea 19 years earlier. image

I want a nice Bi-Metallic clad coin with a grey rim and gold center. A design similar to the 2000-W Library of commerce $10 Commerative on the back and liberty's head, the same design as on the liberty nickel, on the front.
  • The perfect dollar coin would have to have an eagle on the reverse like the WLH's eagle... just because the're cool. The obverse would be designed as the franklin half dollar. The coin would be a 1 ounce silver coin. Original huh?

  • A dollar the size of a morgan, that is bimetalic with the outer "silver" ring containing 0.05 oz silver just so you can say its a silver dollar, and the inner part being gold color. I'd like some image of lady liberty on the front, and a design with us landscapes with an eagle in it somewhere on the reverse. I'm thinking something like the reverse of the 1998-2002 platinum eagles.

My ideal series would be a eight year run minted for one year only in the eight separate mints: P, D, S, W, O, CC, C, D. The contruction of the coin would be bimetalic with a incused center design utilizing an eagle head facing to the right. The aspect would be just the head down to the neck and very similiar to the eagle on the 82 commem. The outer ring would be a raised device design having the word "Liberty" at 12 o'clock, and "In God we trust" at six o'clock, each separated by a small dot. On the reverse I would have a shock of grapes on one side and a shock of thisle on the other again in a raised design with a fine denticle pattern on the outside. The date would be at the bottom of the outer ring and would separate the two shocks. The center would be a incused design and feature a prominately stylized star like the Texas State quarter with the mint mark below the star on the inside disc. Materials for the outside would be a white metal and the center would be a yellow metal such as bronze or brass. The finish, while not mirrored, would not look cheap. Circulating pieces would have a reeded edge.

Proofs would be matte finsh with the same design features but would have a lettered edge inscribed with the words "United States of America repeated twice separated by an oak leaf cluster. The diameter of the coin would be roughly that of the half dollar.

  • Whay are so many of you interested in biimetallic coins? (just wondering)

I'd like to see lady liberty on the obverse, not walking, more like the earlier bust-type obverses, but not identical. a reeding or starring around the rim would be nice as well. On the reverse, just as coinfreak499 said, would be the walker eagle, or at least a similar eagle on the cliff. I've always liked that design. It would be .800-.900 silver, and the size of a half dollar, maybe a little larger.

I would say a bi-metalic with a new design for lady liberty, and of course the eagle on the reverse.

Maybe it could have wavy edges too, like martys dong dollars. That would be interesting....
  • i would say to use the eagle design that was used on the connecticut commem...probably the nicest eagle depiction i can think of.

    The perfect circulating dollar coin:

First and foremost, eliminate the one dollar bill, so that people have no other choice but to USE dollar coins.

Second, make billions and billions of them, so that ordinary people don't think they're anything special that they have to SAVE. That's the problem with Sacs, and before that SBAs, and even Kennedies. They're unusual to find in circulation, so it must be Special! better save it, someday it will be Valuable!

Third, make the design Boring, maybe just something geometric. Again, spend it, don't Save it.

Finally, the size, shape, and composition: it should be round of course (for vending machines), but bimetallic, as others have said. Like a Euro. It should be similar in size to the euro, that is, smaller than a quarter, larger than a nickel. It should be light, so you can carry a few in your pocket. Ever carry a half a dozen sacs? they're HEAVY.

It bears repeating: eliminate the dollar bill.

  • Eagle on the reverse, maybe even do something like the proof platinum.

Obverse would rotate with high relief scenes of america, national park type stuff, in the style of classic commemoratives. edited to also say keep the design simple, do one thing at a time, not 8 like on the state quarters. Have a Yosemite Half Dome dollar, not half dome and some guy and a bear and a...

Actually, I'd almost like anything that has more relief. Ancient US Coins look more like tiny pieces of sculpture than the flat stuff we have today.
Varieties are the spice of a Type Set.

I like the coins we have up until the quarter. I would propose a 50 cent piece slightly smaller than the current Kennedys and bi-metalic with a smooth round edge to destinguish it from current dollar disasters. My dream dollar would then be slightly larger than the current Kennedy Halves, in the same basic color as the Sacagewa with the same edge. The coin should be made of a lighter metal though. The obverse would feature a Miss Liberty-like portrait modeled from a beautiful girl of today who has won a contest to have her image incorporated into a Miss Liberty Design. I think the design's obverse should show Miss Liberty with an olive branch of peace, in a friendly pose. On the reverse should be the most mighty and fearsome bald eagle with design elements that imply that if you attack us we will rain down the power of heaven and hell to vanquish our enemies. image

I realize the theme is similar to our 19th century coinage. Here are the differences... 1.)The image of Miss Liberty should be updated to be a beautiful face with a more modern look. 2.)The color and edges of the coin would be different and yet along a similar theme that we've already headed with the Sacagewa so as to not be too confusing to the general public. 3.)The weight is crucial,... The Ike dollar failed because by the time you might have 8 or so in your pocket it felt like you were carrying a rock in your pocket. This was only practical back in the days when a dollar was several days wages. The weight should be such that you could have eight or so in your pocket and not feel like you're weight lifting to carry them around. 4.)The sizes of both the new half and new dollar are critical. we've learned over 150 years to accept that a nickel is larger than a dime. But the modern American public is in more of a hurry. When we reach into our pocket we want the largest coin to be the dollar, the next largest should be the half, then the quarter. Since we're used to the cent, nickel, dime and quarter being a certain size, and we have 150 or so years of coinage that follows those basic sizes, so we should leave them the heck alone. We would go crazy if we tried to change their sizes.

First off I would like to be entered in the giveaway..

Secondly if I got to design a dollar coin I would want it to be the same dimensions as a Morgan, I just love having a coin of that size, makes it feel like its really worth a dollar(not a sba or a sac) I would also like for it to have the weight of a morgan, but I am not sure if that would be possible. The weight and size just make it feel more real, if you know what I mean.

I think that it would be cool to make it bi metalic, but not it the ways that you see most bimetalic coins with a ring of one metal surrounding the other. Instead I would like ti to be some other sort of design, maybe have the center a gold star shape with the outside being silver in color.
Now as for designs....................... I would want one side to be the statue of liberty, not just the head, but the entire statue. This design would be on both metals. I would also like this side to have the date.
The other side would have to be the twin towers. Preferably with a slogan about peace or pride. This side should also have the mintmark, preferrably near the bottom of the towers, right in between them. I would also like to have a sunset behind the towers.

Gosh, now that I have described it, I almost wish I could have a picture so I could see how it would really look....... lol

Great Contest Rampage!!!!!!! Its really neat to see which direction we all go with this, so are going old school, some with bimetallics and some that are inbetween.

the perfect dollar coin would be a modern version of liberty on one side with the e pluibus unum on the top edge and the date under liberty. the modern version of liberty would be a 3/4 profile in high relief with flowing hair. To the left of liberty would be U.S. A.

The reverse would be a relief of the world, circled by multipl hands....five ro six pairs clenched in a handshake, each pairing of hands would be a different color or race, or the sleeve showing somehow the united nations.............kind of symbolic of united stregth.
Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.
  • I kind of like the bi-metalic coins too but I like the idea of a "silver" dollar too, clad of course. I think a design of liberty in the style of the 2003 Britannia would be really cool. A close up of liberty's head with a stripes of the flag waving in the background. And an eagle on the reverse. Bigger than the Sac and the half but not as big as the Ike was.

Mmmmmm.....as long as I can get at least one of them Ike's image I Like Ike!

Anyway, I don't believe that any of our coins should be depicting dead people...especially politicians. To assume that there has been ANY politician in our nation's history that "everybody" likes is absurd. In fact, the depction of political figureheads on our circulating currency could be quite offensive to some with very differing political views from the person (always dead for some reason) being depicted on the coin. However, there is ONE thing that almost EVERY person in this country can at least agree upon. And that is that the Statue of Liberty depicts the ideas and concepts that have held this country together for so long, and those are freedom, liberty, and security! On September 11, 2001, our freedom, liberty, and security were threatened. Cowardly attacks on civilian targets were conducted on American soil by foreign militants for the first time since the War of 1812 with the British (not including attacks on our soil prior to the said states becoming part of the Union, such as Texas for instance...remember the Alamo...or of course incidents from foreign outlaws like Pancho Villa). This is the first time in a VERY long time that a planned attack by a foreign military organization was conducted on our soil.

So, I believe that the one dollar coin should depict the Statue of Liberty, full bust (like most of our modern coins today), with a rememberance of the attacks on our soil. Bi-mettalic (because that's just way too cool), with simply the word LIBERTY etched across the top of the outter metallic portion, and fifty stars circling the outter metallic portion symbolizing the United Fifty States. The obverse should contain the date of minting. The reverse should (in accordance with Federal Regulation) depict the American Bald Eagle..not just sitting there "spread eagle" with arrows and leaves under its talons, but actually flying! Not just flying anywhere, mind you, but flying high and FREE across the heartland of America! And the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA bannered above it. The outter metallic portion should simply contain 1 DOLLAR identifying the legal tender value. Of course, the coin should be minted for both circulation and proof, because what modern set would be complete without a proof copy image The coin should be 22.5 millimeters (right in between the nickel and the quarter) so as to be small enough to carry ALOT of them in the pocket, but not to be confused with the so often used quarter for vending machines. Plain and simple, and something EVERYBODY can love!

    Here's my concept:

  • << <i>Whay are so many of you interested in biimetallic coins? (just wondering)

    << <i>

Since our neighbors to the north and south are doing it, isn't it time that we catch up to them?
  • OK, I slept on it and decided my dream dollar would be a series of dollars - released quarterly - of a silver clad dollar. It would be smaller in diameter than the Morgan but larger than a half - someplace in-between in diameter.

The series would be based upon the Bill of Rights, including all amendments such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to carry a gun, etc., etc.

For instance, Freedom to carry a gun would have a nice gun on the Reverse. The obverse could change yearly depicting Freedom in all instances - and all coins would have In God We Trust, the Year, and United States of America.

The obverse for one of the years would be an eagle in flight - such as a 'free bird'. The scene below him would be that of coastal sunset on the beach - plain and basic with the 'free bird' standing out, and 'possibly' being bi-metallic, but not necessarily so - and probably not.

Regarding the bimetallic - I think maybe one coin per year could be bimetallic, or all of them - or maybe just the proof coins. Not picky about that part, as long as it does contain at least some silver and is not cheaply made. I think that copper would be a good complementary metal that would 'go with it'.

One year could be the free bird, another year could be Lady Liberty with flowing hair, in a gown with boobs for the guys. Another might have a half naked Indian, such as the Oregon for the ladies, etc. With this great coin series, it would be easy to implement all of the designs that depict what makes America America.

I would call it the Freedom America series. There would be absolutely NO dead presidents on these coins.

The edges would be reeded on the circs, and lettered on the proofs.
There would be limited supply on these dollars, and they would never be re-issued. Mintage would be the same on all coins, and all mintages. The dates would be in Roman Numerals.

There are many ideas to expand on this series, which is why I like the idea. It would not only depict our freedom - but has lots of room for some really great designs each and every year until all of the Freedoms have been depicted. The designs would not be like the boring quarter designs, in fact a requirement would be that the design was made by a regular 'free citizen.'

I may expand on my idea later in another thread, if I get time. Maybe not.

  • Well I think in order for the coin to have any chance of being used in circulation it would have to be smaller in size than the a morgan dollar, people just would not carry something like that in their pockets. People won't even carry Sac Dollars so something larger is out of the question. As far as composition I would love to see something bimetallic, like the euros. Obverse design something the public is familiar with like the statue of liberty woule be nice. The design on the platinum eagles would work. We wouild have to have an eagle on the back as well, a new design of an eagle in flight maybe carrying an olive branch and arrows to sybmolize the fight for peace.
  • How about a larger diameter coin as stated, plus lighter with bi metalic compostion with added edge lettering. Maybe the coin does not need to be round? Perhaps an eight sided coin but the phrase "There are two sides to every coin" would be, well lets' say out of place. That is if you count the third side which is the edge. So that means it would be a Ten sided coin.imageimage

Edited to add one more side.

I think the perfect dollar coin would have to be something that the general public embraces thereby requiring that retails use the coin. Right now they accept them but do not order them by the rolls for general use. The coin should have some quantity of silver. A previous thread mentioned that the 40% Kennedy halves only bring about .70 at the high end of melt and .60 at the low end. Therefore, perhaps a 40% silver clad coin, a bit larger than the half, perhaps 35mm in diameter.
The coin should depict Liberty and not a president. If the design incorporated a 3/4 view of Liberty walking toward you I think it would work. The reverse should prominently display the words ONE DOLLAR.

My brain just went to sleep..........image

Where was I, oh yeah, the words one dollar should appear on the reverse to emininate any coinfusion with consumers and retailers IF a smaller diameter then 35mm is used. If not, then the traditional Eagle would suffice with the words one dollar.

I wish I could put this to paper but I only collect em I don't design em! image

I would like to see a dollar coin that is made out of a new unique alloy. The coin would be the size of a Morgan, but would be as light in weight as a quarter. The alloy would tone naturally in about a years time to form a beautiful light rainbow pattern that would stop and would form a permanent protective layer that would make the coin impermeable to chemicals and gasses. The alloy would not allow fingerprints to appear on the coin. The alloy would contain exactly one dollar worth of a blend of metals, and would include some gold and silver. The alloy would, of course, be impermeable to scratches, wear and contact marks but would be made with a technology that would allow a MS70 full strike.

The coin would have an incarnation of Liberty on its obverse that would be so beautiful that all who gaze upon it would instantly desire to posess several for their collection, irregardless of mintage. However, the coin would also be so fun to use that it would also become the most commonly utilized currency for everyday purchases.

The coin would have a lifelike eagle on its reverse, usually. Every once in a while, unannounced beforehand, special commemorative reverses honoring historical events or natural treasures would be released with random numbers of mintages from 1 to 1,000,000,000.

    Or something along those lines.

    Thanks for the contest.

The perfect dollar coin for today would be a reintroduction of liberty like the rejected 1979 dollar design that people have mentioned. But failing that, I would love to see something like what was done for the platinum bullion coin series. Have the statue of liberty (or some form) on the obverse and a themed reverse. Could be national parks or landmarks or whatever. No end of possibilities. That would be cool.

image Let's think about this for a minute. What makes this country of ours so fantastic? Freedom! Who maintains that Freedom for us? The Men and Women of our Military Services of which I'm a proud retired member. I would like to see a dollar the size of a Morgan that honors these men and women who have given their lives to maintain our Freedom and some are still missing in action. No One Sacrifices So Much For "US"! I have been all over the world and no where I've been can compare to this Great Country Of Ours! I feel the Obverse should be of a person, place, or thing, that depicts an important aspect of the military in American History. Somewhat like the top picture below. The reverse should be a strong Eagle like the Reverse of the bottom coin. Instead of "In God We Trust" place "To Freedom", "Let Freedom Rain", or something similar. We could rotate the honor of these coins every year, two years, five years, etc., between the respective services. Well I'll get off my soap box and look at more coins. Appreciate the chance to enter this giveaway! Lee

Heh. That's very wishful thinking, although I do believe that the metal niobium may come closest to what you are thinking. image This metal is commonly used in body jewelery as it can be forcibily oxidized to form a beautiful bluish tone to it, or you can let it naturally oxidize in that manner and the blue tone would show up over a period of time. The only problem with niobium is that it can be a royal pain to work with and the cost of working with it might not be cost-effective enough for the US Mint. I too would love to see some real gold and silver back in our coinage, but I think the general public would suddenly hoard any coin that was being made with real gold or real silver in it. image
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

How about a coin with a tree on one side. The ever present eagle would be on the reverse.

    Think Connecticut Commemorative!

Buyer and seller of vintage coin boards!
  • Does anyone think a statehood dollar progam would something that would get dollar coins in circulation. Enter me please. Think how much the mint could make on this one.image

  • Can you visualize a dollar coin with some of the great Native American Chiefs on the obverse? Chiefs like Red Cloud, Chief Joseph, Geronimo and many many others. The Reverse would depict a buffalo, a different stance for each coin but always a buffalo.
"If I had a nickel for every nickel I ever had, I'd have all my nickels back".
  • My ideal dollar coin would be a copper collar, about size of Morgan, with a standing Lincoln on obverse and sitting Lincoln from monument on reverse.

I'd like to see a dollar coin(s) being done like the Australian lunar series is done, just slightly different....
What I mean is that I would like to see a theme and have it animal related.
    Cats, dogs, horses, etc.

I don't mind the dead presidents, and I don't mind Sacagawea. But, I am tired of the politically correct bozos (which is why susan b. was on the coin, then sacagawa) and would prefer to just get away from the arguments for awhile.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • The Anna Kournikova Dollar. Now that would be perfection
