Brock Rookie: Whatcha think?

The corners look relatively good, but I'm concerned about the stuff between his rt eye and the bill of his cap.

  • That top left corner looks a little boogered up. Every corner has a touch to it. I'd say it's a 6. Also looks like a wax stain to the left of his face. That may be what you see on his brow.

I see a 6... but maybe a 5 if that eye issue is worse up close. Good luck.

  • That left side of his face is how the card is. Check some other examples and you will see the discoloration in the same spot on his face. Same with the faded out coloring on his shoulder. With that said, and the best I could tell from looking at the scan, I would say the card is a 6. Centering and chipping are big problems for this card, and from the scan neither seem to much of an issue for it to not warrant a 6.

This card almost never looks good in any grades but the highest.

You're absolutely right; this isn't the prettiest card around.
However, I'm not talking about the spot at the corner of his eye near his nose. I've compared this pic to a PSA 8 that's for sale on eBay, and yes that's just his face.

I'm mostly concerned about the white/clear squiggles that run from just below his eye upwards to the tip of the cap bill. I can't tell if that's just from the scanner or from a defect in the card.

Auction has the running close to $30 with a few hours left. It will probably get sniped to $50, which could push it beyond the SMR for PSA 5 ($45).

I'm not looking for an investment since the card is for me (to be passed down), but I still don't want a bad card if I can avoid it.

Thanks for your input. It's one of the reasons why I really like this place.

  • JS - I now see what you are talking about. It's hard to tell if that is a surface scratch or just some dust/lint on the scanner. There is also something similar to that on his neck, just above his necklace. The shape that white marking takes, near the bill of his cap, looks to fold in a triangle (maybe star) type shape; it would be hard to imagine a scratch taking shape like that.

Still if the card is cheap enough it looks to be worth a shot.

PAndrews - that is a mighty fine Brock you sold. Most PSA 8's go over SMR, but yours is the nicest I have seen. Great centering and very little tilt. He would have looked great in my HOF Rookies set.
  • i always wondered (when this set came out i was 9) why is he wearing a railroad engineers hat w/cub logo???........still wondering 40+ years later.

    Hehehe... Hadn't thought of that.

BTW the card sold after 15 bids for $56.09 - raw.

I'm still amazed at how raw cards often sell more than graded ones. It's like there's a premium for people who think the card is going to grade better - which submitting to PSA has taught me just doesn't happen.
  • I think alot of people put together raw sets. Also, mid grade cards seem to sell well. To each his own.

So true. I tried selling a card graded a 7 twice but the reserve was never met. I cracked it out and put it back up as NM and the reserve was met and then some. People want to try and get the 9's and 10's.

I know of ebayers that buy graded cards under one account and sell them raw under a different account for a sizable profit, but they embellish the card's condition considerably.
