So heritage got it's first $1,000,000 coin bid (now $2,000,000 bid)

1787 DBLN Brasher New York Style Doubloon

The other has a reserve at 1.9M, but this one has met the reserve.

When's PCGS coming out with the "Brasher New York Style Doubloon" registry set. Bet these coins will be worth even more then image

Looks like I'd better crack mine out and resubmit quickly before the pops go up.image
  • Wow, heck of a coin! I know nothing about them, but talk about a rarity from what I read on the Heritage site! Worth even more than my MS65 '32-D Washington quarter! image One thing is for sure, it's not a coin I will ever be able to own...unless I rob someone very rich! image

  • If my memory is correct, I was there at the NY auction in 81' when it sold for around $495,000
    Is this a good return?

I think it's a poor return, without doing some simple math.

Why is the better coin reserved for half the price of the lower graded coin ?

Perceived uniqueness because of the placement of the punch on the breast vs the wing.

If it sells for $1M, then it is somewhere around 3%/year

I was relieved to see that this coin qualifies for Heritage's "six months to pay plan."

$2.3M with juice. It was an internet bid. So who is sitting in the livingroom in the boxer's placing $2,000,000 bids?

    Wow, and on-line.
This seems to me to be pretty telling of the short- to mid-term future of our coin market. I have to wonder that the "big" coins, those that are famous, infamous, condition rarities, &/or from very short mintages, are going to continue to bring suprising bids, while also-ran coins/conditions/mintages, etc., are left without so much attention, creating a market where one has to be even more circumspect.

What about if it sells for $2 million? image

Now $2.1M hammer with an hour or two to go before it goes off. I think this makes it the third highest price ever realized at auction behind the 1933 $20 and the Childs 1804 $1 - just eclipsing two other 1804's and the Eliasberg 1913 Lib nickel [the second time around].

Legend was the underbidder at $2.5M ... on the other one, Laura never even managed to get her hand up before it exceeded $2M.

The auction was well-attended. I didn't stay for the entire night, but saw some phenomenal prices. Besides the Brasher doubloons bringing $2.6 and $2.1 million, the Stellas (which were out of order in the catalog) brought $115k, $200k, $250k, $570k (for the 1879 coiled hair), $270k, $230k, and an astounding $850k for the 1880 coiled hair in PR66 Cameo. The 1833 Half Eagle in PR67 also fetched $850k; the 1835 Half Eagle $600k; the 1795 Eagle in MS64 $400k; and the 1839/8 Eagle in MS66 was hammered down at $350k. There were many other 6 figure coins. The Barber coins brought decent prices. Many lots were won by internet buyers, including the 1913-S quarter in MS68 at $150,000 and the 1904-S half in MS67 at $80,000. I'm not an expert in the Barber series, but it seemed that the halves brought stronger bids than the dimes and quarters.

It was fun to watch. I just wish I could afford some of those coins!image I'm looking forward to the opening of the show Thursday morning.

  • Uh Oh!! Anyone know where I can borrow $2400000??? image
  • One hell of a price for that coin if you ask me. I would prefer a nice set of roosies. But to each his own. It is a nice example.
