If rims were bump free and that dent below the tail were not there, I'd be O.K. with a XF40. With those minor drawbacks, I agree with the VF35. Thats a date where you can reasonably expect to find a fair number of really nice VF coins...at least in comparison to some of the other early dollars.
vf-25+. here's why: e pluribus unum is strong, so that puts rev. into vf category. obv. hair detail is about 75% there, so that's vf as well. however, stars are mostly flat, very little detail separation at the bustline, the face is flat, $ rev. feathers are not complete, tail feathers not all there, so that for sure keeps it at or below vf-30. finally, the main focal area, liberty's face, has a broad flat cheek, not rounded at all. coin is well-centered, looks nicely original, so it derserves some choice consideration.
i'd settle on vf-25, vf-30 at the very most on an optimistic day.
Wow, the grade opinions ar tight. I agree with them. It looks like mine that is graded VF25. The coin is a strong VF. I don't think it is origional toning though. It is too light overall for 200+ year old silver. If it has been cleaned, it wasn't recently though.
Does the eye detail look a bit odd to anyone? It seems too strong for a VF.
Looks like we all missed that this is B-23, an R.4 variety. B-23 is the only early dollar with 8 stars on the left and 5 stars on the right. This variety is usually weakly struck. It is correct to grade by surfaces on the early material, rather than just detail. I am sticking with my earlier opinion of VF-35.

Edit. Nah, I changed my mind. Bump my opinion up toward 25-30.
