Sportscaster cards

Anyone know if PSA will grade these or are they too large to slab? What is the largest size slab available?

They coulsd theoretically use the big "T3" holders, but the insert size would have to be modified. So for the time being they won't grade them Plus, at $35 a whack for T3 slabbing, I doubt the market for Sportscasters could absorb that cost and turn a profit for dealers.

Aren't Bird, Magic, and maybe even Gretzky included in these sets?

If so, does anyone know what type of price NRMT or better copies would fetch? I haven't seen them offered on ebay recently.

There is a Gretzky. No Bird or Magic as far as I know.

That is a steep charge. What is the size cutoff between Oversize and Supersize?

    Dave - gorgeous Bird.

wallst32 - Simsclassicsports usually has a decent supply. I bought my Steve Prefontaine recently from them for $20. I have not seen a Bird or Magic sell in a while but I would guess they would be $100 +, same with the Gretzky.

    Aro-
Keep your eyes open for 'lots' of these cards. I've seen a few and got a nice deal on a lot of 82 of them last month for under $20 (includes the Johnson and Bird).

The Prefontaine from what I've seen has been selling for the most.

If PSA starts grading them at a reasonable cost, I'm sure the values will increase.

BTW- I saw that GAI has begun grading the '69 topps rulers cards (ugly in oversized holders).

Sportscaster cards are a fabulous autograph item. I still have mine that I got as a child (unfortunately, it stops well before the last series), and have gotten 3 signed (Bill Walton, Elgin Baylor, and a UCLA championship team card by John Wooden).

I can just imagine the number of baseball ones they would grade for Master Sets if they ever graded them at a reasonable price.

Couldn't they find a worse picture of Bird or Magic to use?

That Wester Pacific defender on the Johnson card was in the right place at the right time. That would be cool to be on his card.

  • Great scans!

Dhjacks, I think that jersey says "Western Michigan".
  • I have a stack of these if anyone is interested. I don't think I have the Gretzky, but I know there are a lot of HOF'ers from all sports.
Condition varies, but most are pretty nice.
