1859-C $1 gold piece with hole

Seems to be quite a few people into holed coins on the boards. Thought I'd share this 1859-C $1 gold with a hole I picked up the other day. Pretty rare coin. I've never seen a C mint gold with a hole.

It is pretty cool, though the hole makes me weep.

Thanks for sharing. The one dollar gold coin is likely the most holed gold coin in the history of US coinage, often used on charm bracelets or necklaces without engraving or with one side smoothed and engraved as a love token. Oddly enough, even considering the lowered mintages, I've found more holed C mint one dollar gold pieces than I have one from any other mint. Neat coin!

That's very odd. All the ones on my hat are Philly-mint pieces (of course). I do agree that the G$ is the most commonly-holed US gold coin. (Probably for practical reasons, as they were no doubt very easy to lose when they were carried in pockets!)

I'd love to have a C or D. I've never owned a Charlotte or Dahlonega coin, holed or unholed, despite having been a resident of both NC and GA.

I keep hoping that one of these metal detecting visits to some old plantation site will pay off one day... image
