How Does Teletrade Decide Which Lots Get the "RAINBOW" tag?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,968 ✭✭✭✭✭
Admittingly, the RAINBOW tag that Teletrade uses on some of their auction lots draws my attention and makes me look. The only problem is more and more of the coins are looking like this:
Teletrade "RAINBOW" Morgan

I'm disapointed. Is it a paid feature the submitter requests upon submission of consignments?

Most teletrade "rainbows" are IMHO... junk.

Easy question that I will be glad to answer. If it has any toning whatsoever it gets the RAINBOW designation irregardless if it has the the shape or even the color of an actual rainbow.
Here's a great example of a Black Beauty that several of us descerning collectors enjoy collecting because who in their right mind would buy a coin that was SOLID BLACK (We can't afford the high priced fingerprinted tweaked pictures so-called rainbows from sleazeBay.) That's right, solid black!! Does anybody see any remote semblance to a rainbow? Not even a little??? hahahha
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Black coins ROCK. I also like dusty grey, drab Morgans that come alive when tilted. One can get those cheap too!

Did I say that out loud?

Eric, interesting you should mention those grey toned Morgans. I have purchased two bank wrapped Morgan rolls recently and 3 of the 4 end coins have just that sort of tone. Looks unattractive at first, then as you examine the colors you see a veritable rainbow (no pun intended) of colors. Pretty coins, all but impossible to convey the attractive nature in a photograph.

This one is too. The lighting makes it look kinda purplelish but it's BLACK black black. No veritable rainbow colors here. you know the old saying, once you go black you never go back

Actually, you have to designate rainbow on the submission form. It's up to the consignor, not Teletrade.

<<<It's up to the consignor, not Teletrade.>>> Ahhh...that explains it. I wag'ed TT had a panel of experts that reviewed & described the coin & applied the designation. Thanks for the only on-topic info in this whole thread.

Dog, very nice satin black looking "Black Beauty's." Some folks can't appreciate these things like we do.
Man, you could have tipped me off and saved at least one for me. Oh well, while everybody has been fighting
on the board, I've been snapping up some nice Bust halves.

Bill, I thought for sure you'd say that they let Nick pick out which of the dimes are rainbowtoned and that's whay they're all so ugly.....but you seem to be playing nice today - what gives! <G>

If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
  • With this type of tone the chance is much better that nothing has ever been done to them, i.e. coin doctoring.

I just sold this one yesterday:*
    PCGS Black Betty Morgan

I miss it already! It's a neat coin. These Morgans with this color are tough to locate actually.

*Okay to link as I am not currently running any auctions.

I've wondered that myself. They have some Washingtons designated Rainbows, that are ugly black and brown. They doen't look like rainbows to me. I was thinking about that tonight when browsing an upcoming auction. maybe it's the seller who gets to designate the coin rainbow.
    US Navy CWO3 retired. 12/81-09/04

    Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.
