I pulled this nice toning 40D Jeff out of my Whitman album. Can you give me your grading opinions on this raw coin?

MS66FS if it has great lustre, otherwise MS65FS
    When in doubt, don't.

MS65FS. The spots sort of hurt it.

Nice Jeff. I'll go look at my collection now, my favorite.

The spots are there, but this is probably a 10x enlargement of the coin. At naked-eye viewing I'll bet they hardly show up at all and aren't really much of a limiting factor -- and especially if the lustre is booming. Also, this is a B/W image of the coin, so whatever color toning is there probably really distracts away from the spots.
    When in doubt, don't.

If the luster is booming, and if the spots weren't there, I'd say the coin had a good shot at 67FS. It looks
    really clean!

If you sent it in, I'd guess it would come back 65FS. The few carbon spots are miniscule, but the one
by LIBERTY would bug me on a 66 coin, especially with this date when there are plenty to choose from.

  • With the big pics the spots stand out, however if you really cant see them with the naked eye too bad, you may go 66FS. Nice strike!

While I like the reverse of this coin (it looks as though you might have some color there), I'm not a fan of the obverse. 40D's are usually pretty well struck coins (alot of the 40-D's I find are FS) and this one is no exception. However, I wouldn't TPG this coin as long as the spots on the obverse were there when it arrived at PCGS primarily due to the fact that a PCGS 40-D 65FS coin is probably almost as cheap these days as the actual grading fees/shipping. (off the top of my head).

With the spots, no better than 65FS... if they didn't BB it for environmental damage.

Caveat this with... figure out how to remove the spots (someone else probably has a secret formula to do that cause the only way I know how to clean a coin is to drop a penny in taco bell sauce) and the coin might grade 66FS...

    I hope this helps!

for me, it's ms-63. those spots should be removed, as they appear to be etching the surfaces. strongly recommend you get the coin curated.

MS65 Full steps... by ANACS standards, I think it gets 5.5 steps. Nice strike, but the 1940-D comes nice

64 FS ... nice reverse strike, triffle weak on obverse, spots hurt.
