Think I May Become a Darksider :)

Hi..

I've been collecting mostly Washingtons & Kennedy's the past couple of years and as my sets near completion (actually I suppose they will never be complete to me), I feel the need to start something new.

I've thought about what direction I'd like to go and one type of coin that really appeals to me are bimetallics. I've only done a little searching so far and it seems like alot countrys mint bimetallics and the US has only done one... the 2000 Library of Congress.

A couple of general question to start...

Has anyone else done something like this?
Is there a resident expert here on the forums?
Any good reference material on bimetallics?
Is this maybe a bigger project than I think it is?

Thats it for now I guess....thanks for any input.

Ron

    1. Yes. I think there might be some websites out there if you look around. There are some clubs in Europe, I believe
(not surprising with the Euros and all...)

    2. If so, it ain't me!

    3. Dunno- maybe? But maybe not. Maybe you'll be the one to write it, in time?

    4. Again, maybe- it's a pretty wide field, but I think it's a neat idea.

    Hi Ron,

    Welcome to the Dark!

Yes, there are a couple of members here who collect bimetallics (although their names escape now).

Don't know of any "only bimetallic" catalogues, but start with 1901 to Present Krause World Coins. Amazon's got 'em for about $45

    Enjoy and good luck!

  • You could do some modern Russian bimetallics for a very small sum of money. chervonets.com has a nice selection.

  • Thanks so far for the info and ideas.

Just did a Google search on bimetallic coins and took a quick look at WWBC (Worldwide Bi-Metallic Collectors Club). There was a gentleman in the Netherlands that did a catalog and says he does updates every couple of months. Anyone know about this?

Also found a group of 50+ members on Yahoo that I have not checked out yet.

One site said there was 117 countrys that mint bimetallics...image

This should keep me going for awhile. image

There are many countries including Mexico and Canada that do bimetallics. Here is a link to a dealer who has a section on his site for world bimetallics I believe.

I am familiar with the club,, I did some reasearch a couple years ago on the piece that is in my icon. The source of the picture is on their original catalog but was not available, I also believe they had a write-up in coin world last summer. WBCC LINK
