Grades are in on some Mercury Dimes -- Psyched!!

I'll post pictures when I get them, but I had 2 orders come back with grades today:

1 21854352 1923-S 10C USA MS65FB (bought as a 64FB -- HUGE!! bump on this one)
2 21854353 1943 10C USA MS67FB (bought as a 67FB -- thought it was nice and took shot at an 8)

1 21850748 1930-S 10C USA MS66FB (bought raw -- part of a pretty toned/raw collection I've discovered -- it's cousins' pictures [ 4 Merc's to grade for fun] are posted in a different thread) -- this one was also HUGE!!! for me. This coin is simply dynamite -- can't wait to post pictures to show you. Trying to find a nice 30-S has been my personal Moby Dick all year -- and I've won!!

Anyway, PCGS is back on my good graces after today -- I should be good to go for at least....a week, or so, before I'm grumpy again...but for now, I'm riding high image

Oh, and the irony -- today's my birthday! What a present! image

Very nice birthday present! Was the '23-S previously in a PCGS holder? If so, which style was it, and did you crack it out before submitting it?

I'll have to try to time it so my next submission is ready on my birthday. image

    yup details details.....

the 23-S in 65FB is very very tough - quire RARE in true FB - if PCGS just graded it - I'd assume it is a truly nice example. Definenitely post pictures when you get it back ~~~~

and happy birthday darn nice score image

OK, back from dinner with the wife and kids, and just got done watching Alias off my HD DVR -- technology is great!

    Here's the scoop:

I bought the 1923-S in a green PCGS 64FB holder and the 1943 in a green PCGS 67FB holder from Alan at Cheap Slab store. I've gotten to know him (e-mail, etc.) -- good guy. Among his myriad of PCI and other off-brand slabs you'll find, dare I say, some VERY nice PCGS slabs...some in old holders. But don't get me wrong -- these two coins were nice coins -- irrelavent of the holder they were in. I didn't crack them -- sent in for regrade (something I don't typically do). In my heart I knew the 23-S was a 65FB but because of the huge price jump didn't really think they'd stick in to a 65FB holder because I'm just a little guy. But this coin is really all there and I must admit the PCGS graders stepped up and did the right thing. The 67FB is probably the nicest untoned (really original -- all white) coin I've seen...and I thought it had a shot at a 68FB...so I figured for $30 it was worth a shot...I guess because a good deal of the 68FB's I've seen have nice color, and this one was just white, they didn't give it a 68FB. Also a Pop 3 in a 1943 68FB probably scared them. I'm very OK with it coming back a 67FB -- it's a true Super Gem...and at the high end of the 67FB spectrum.

The 30-S is a different story. I've been hunting for a nice one all year. I found a guy that purchased an entire Mercury Dime collection back in 1982 and hasn't opened it since. By luck I got him to open it up and I saw one stunning coin -- all raw -- after another. When I saw the 30-S I knew this coin should be a lock at 66FB, with a shot at 67FB because the color/toning was just outstanding! I didn't let my enthusiasm for the coin overwhelm me, though, and just paid a small premium over 65FB dealer bid price (peanuts in comparisonto how much real nice 30-S's go for) -- shocking most people at the show...that I bought a raw coin at a premium over 65FB bid. BTW...I hooked up with the guy again and bought the 4 coins I posted in another thread for grading (they are a bit less quality, though).

That's the scoop on the 3 coins I received grades on today -- what a great day! Especially on the 23-S -- just great!

Oh, and just today I sent in for grading a guess what -- a 1945 with FB!!!! Yes boys...this is the real deal! I think it'll come back as a 64FB...but I'll take it!

    Thank you all!!

My raw guy has a lot of really nice key date Merc's, most of them are non FB though. If anyone is looking for keys in non-FB let me know. I can grade them out/get you prices for them the next time I see him (at the end of this month). PM me if you're looking for anything in perticular.

I haven't shared this with anyone here yet, but he has a 21-D that I think can become the POP 1 MS67FB and looks as nice as all of the colorful 68FB's I've seen here. I know it's hard to believe, but the 30-S I got from him was a close 67FB...this 21-D he has BLOWS!!!!! my 30-S away. If you saw this coin, your hands would shake -- no S{!T image

I've gone back and forth with him and I think I can get him to sell it to me for -- sit down - $14.5k You want to know what's even sicker -- I'm actually considering it. I can't spend that kind of cash for a coin for my collection, but I know if this coin was in a PCGS 67FB holder and was put in to one of these high-flying conventions/auctions, it would bring ludicrous $$$. I know I must be smokin' crack for even thinking about it or saying it in public, but since I saw this coin about 6 weeks ago -- fondled it more like image -- I haven't been able to get it out of my mind and I compare every Merc I see to it and nothing is even coming close.

Please knock some sense in to me and tell me to move on from this 21-D -- it's evil image

I think you should go for it. Just think how long you will regret it if you pass it up. Life only comes around once, unless of course I am wrong and there is reincarnation. Anyway thanks for the interesting read.
