I liked it, but ended up not being crazy about it. I bought a 10-box case, but only opened 7 boxes. I finally just completed the set today (Thanks, Stone, your cards are on the way). It never really became a hot set.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • I wonder why it didn't become hot? It looks really nice to me...
  • It looks nice, but I don't think the chase cards caused enough stir and it also had a very little rookie base. I love the set myself and love the way prices have softened on it.

That's the beauty of the hobby. Aesthetics usually has nothing to do with price, so you can have beautiful stuff cheap. But it's another unquantifiable part of the hobby as to what is a "fun rip" and what isn't. The lack of variety in the inserts and subsets, both in design and content, I think blunted the impact this set had. If they had, I dunno, chrome mini versions instead of stickers, then it might've taken off. Or if the whites were #/25 instead of 1/1, I would've chased them in a second. The balance between scarce and too scarce wasn't struck on that.

  • I have also been happy the prices seem to be very reasonable on the set!

I also agree on the 1/1 inserts.. That seems crazy to me since it doubt anyone would be able to complete a set and why bother trying when they are that rare! Has anyone even seen one?

Sure. They pop up on ebay from time to time. The first week it was out, one guy sold the Nomar and the Kevin Brown for about $120 and $100 respectively. A guy wrote into Beckett a while ago saying he had pulled 2 Carlos Delgados from the same pack (the replacement backup had gone out accidentally). I tracked a half-dozen sales in the 6 weeks after release, but lost track of them. Still looking for the Thomas, Pujols, Prior, and Sizemore.

  • They could have either kept the white 1/1 or made a gold that was 1/1, but there should have been something that was numbered to 25 or 50 to give a chase product that was difficult to pull, but not impossible. That would have given pack busters something realistic to chase and set builders a set that was difficult but not impossible.

  • Are their any short prints in the set (besides the obvious parrallel cards)? If so could someone direct me to a list? Does anyone have a listing of the variations in the set (i.e. different name spellings, etc...)?

    Thanks!
  • Found the list - thanks.
