Clashing on Morgans's Hairvee and VAMs

This is related to an earlier posting. I've seen the images of clashing in the VAM book. I was wondering about clashing on the obverse in the hairvee area. It seems like every Morgan that is clashed in this area is a VAM (usually the T from TRUST). Is this true?

I am looking at clash marks on a half roll of 1898-O's in mint state. The only clashed VAMs in this area are VAMs 7A and 13A. Doesn't look like the 13A. The 7A shows a T in TRUST, I only see a line. My coins have a near or very near date. These two VAMs do also. I must be getting close. The 7A shares the same reverse as the VAM 4. The book shows the mint mark on the VAM 4. My coins looks very similar, but I don't have images of the VAM-13A reverse.

Do I have a hoard of 7A VAMs or is this something else? Is any clashed hairvee a VAM?

    Hi Norm,

Mark Kimpton is the foremost Morgan clashed die specialist. He's writing THE book on clashed dies,
due out this year hopefully. I've heard the book will be a real eye-opener.

You may want to contact Mark about your coin at Mark_Kimpton@hotmail.com. Very friendly and helpful in my
    experience.

Thanks for the contact. I sent Mark a note and he emailed me right back. I hope he doesn't mind me quoting his response, but it was great info and cleared up my questions.

<< <i>... You are correct in that the hair vee area
can demonstrate a clashed "t" from the reverse word "trust". However the
coin you are showing clearly does not show a clashed "t". What you are
seeing is the line of the eagles wing. If you look to the top of the eagles
left wing I would expect you would see the reciprical clash of the hair next
    to the wing.

Clashing occurs in roughly 1 out of 50 morgan dollars. Out of those coins
that clash very few of them will show letter transfer. In order to be
considered a clashed VAM the coin has to show either letter transfer or a
die break large enough to see with the naked eye. The coin you depict is
not a seperate clashed VAM variety, although it is clashed. ... >>
