A couple Liberty "V" Nickels from my Type Set...

The Liberty "V" nickel doesn't seem to be very popular vs Morgan dollars of about the same time in history. Maybe it's the size and the silver content of the Morgan dollar that makes it the more sought after coin by collectors. To me the "V" Nickel has just as much beauty in the detail of Liberty as the Morgan dollar. The reverse has just a simple V as a centerpiece, but the detail in the wreath is a work of art as well. Anyone else want to post their "V" Nickels ? I'm sure there are some real beauties out there. image

I used to have one example. But I'm going to eventually get a nice pr cam example for my types. Eventually.

the v-nickel is just as ugly as the morgan dollar, imo. they are both awful designs. however, i just happen to have a complete set of unc v's, & regardless of how unattractive the design is artistically, i like the coins a lot. in fact, i like 'em more than buff's, of which my set has been incomplete for years!

i got a cool 1885. low grade but still cool would be a AG+ ( it looks nicer than some of the G grade coins )id classify it as a AG+ to G

  • I love 'em. Like dorkkarl, I have a set...although mine are in the VF-EF range for the most part (86 and 86 in G)

I think they lack popularity because:
    1. Relatively short and uninspiring set--only one mint mark date in the bunch--only a couple of REAL rareties.
    2. Hard to collect in circ condition. You can find them all easily in grades up to a weak VG, but it's an absolute bi tch to find them in "no problem" VF-EF. Start talking slabbed MS dates, and the cost goes up exponentially.
    3. Not exactly a really beautiful coin to the masses...although I'd argue that nice EF pieces and MS coins are attractive.

    I have a few image

The '85 I just picked up in AG is a far cry from the PR65 Cam I have in the set. My favorite is still my icon (PR65DCAM)

    Nice coins!

I think they're underrated... maybe because Barber designed them??

i was fortunate to complete my set years ago before the 1885, & especially the 1886 began to rise so much in price. overall, i like to collect high-end circulated coins, but the libnicks is one series where i think uncs represent the design best. that said, i'm impressed by the examples everyone presented here. a great series!!!
