I'm thinking machine doubling. I don't see any serif splits and machine doubling has the "step down" appearance that your photo does.
I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!

    Definitely machine doubling.

Try buying an attributed doubled die or two, study those so you know what you're looking at, then go from there. That's what I eventually did to learn the whole thing a little better...I ended up spending a fourth of a ten year old collection because I hadn't learned it well enough by photos alone, and had been accumulating a lot of junk among the few nice ones I had found. Once I had the real deal in hand from a reputable source, I knew exactly what to look for from then on...basically my eye for it snapped into place.

Quite a number of doubled dies can be had in nice shape for under $10. It doesn't have to be something major. Even some of the CPG listed doubled dies are available for well under $20.
