Are NGC Star * coins worth a lot of premium

tsacchtsacch Posts: 2,929 ✭✭✭
and if so, how much.

I have seen a few lately that were stars and were just amazing and brought some decent cash, but are they really worht it?

Any pics of some real doozies?

I think it all really depends on what exactly the coin is. I've seen some stars that have floored me with color, and I've seen stars for white coins that are just damn nice. Granted the white coins should get a premium for being so appealing, but I think a colorful coin will get a much greater premium.

Like grading itself, the NGC star designation is at least somewhat subjective in nature. Many of the star coins look virtually identical to numerous non-star coins, while other star coins do indeed exhibit superior/special eye-appeal.

Accordingly, premiums can range from minimal to dramatic. It depends upon the eye-appeal (and quality) of the coins themselves.

The star is worth as much of a premium as you're willing to pay. It doesn't mean the coin will upgrade. Just that it looks very appealing to their graders. And eye appeal is a very subjective and personal thing. For some coins I probably would pay a little more.

    I made a 1955 10c PF69* at NGC (it's a pop 2/0)

I hope that star carries it over to PCGS PR69 (where it currently is a pop 0/0)

I really wanted this one, but lost out secondary to my weak bid.

On proof coins, the * means something different then on toned coins. It would go

    PF69
PF69* (maybe the coin has a 1 side CAM)
    PF69CAM
PF69*CAM (again a one sided UCAM
    PF69UCAM
PF69*UCAM (the moose, drippy Ultra Cameo coin)

On business strikes the * is given for eye appeal.

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Interesting discussion. I firmly agree with NWCS & Mark.

At what grade does NGC start adding a Star designation ?

Interesting question. I don't see why they couldn't give a star to a particularly attractive PO-1 coin. Have they done this yet? If so, I hope the "eye appeal" factor at the low end of the grading spectrum means "attractive, given the excessive wear", rather than "almost the next grade up".

There really isn't any "formula" or book one can use to determine eye appeal and is exactly why I'm against the TPGs giving their interpretation of what is or is not appealing as part and parcel of the physical grade.

Nevertheless, I must admit to filling the pockets of at least one seller because of eye appeal---this PCGS 52-D in MS65FS. It's by no means a reg grade and am actively looking for a 66 but I had to have this one, even tho I know I paid 50% over a 65 value.

Forgot to add this might cross to a NGC 66*.

    Lowest I've seen is MS63.

They won't give it on a coin graded less than 63.

Edited to add: I have one coin in now for regrade that if it gets a grade bump or the * designation it will at a minimum triple in value. I chose to have it sent it as I didn't want to leave any money on the table when I sell it. So yes the designation can be a premium. In this case if the coin gets both a bump in grade and a * the value with increase 7-8 fold. I am not expecting that it will, but better to have the money in my pocket then someone elses. It's a cheap insurance policy in my humble opinion.

I have yet to see an NGC STAR coin I didn't like a lot. Maybe one day I will, but up to now NGC's STAR is a great indicator of a pretty coin (not always a grade bump, just a pretty coin).

I still think PCGS did/is missing the boat on this one and could/should begin their own PQ type of service.
