Maybe if you can show which charity has the largest percent of each dollar actually going to the victoms it would be a very clear choice. I know some charities only have pennies on the dollar reach the people in need- lets make sure we give to the one that gets the most bang for our buck. mike

  • Here is a link mrpaseo provided earlier from the Combined Federal Campain which lists charities and the % of your donation which goes toward adminastrative costs etc. Of the two I looked up the American Red Cross takes 9.6% and UNICEF takes 14.8%.

    charities

There is an index at the end.

I guess I go with the American Red Cross

I found this site www.charitynavigator.org for evaluating charities.

    American Red Cross

    UNICEF

    World Emergency Relief

I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

I called a donation to the American Red Cross at 1-800-HELP-NOW. If you request, it will go into a relief fund for the Tsunami Victims, and 100% goes to the victims.

I vote for American Red Cross.

    Thanks

When you give to the American Red Cross it goes to the International Red Cross. 85% of Red Crossers on relief efforts are volunteers(freebies). US Volunteers will be under the International RC on this assignment. I know, I am a RC volunteer.

  • On Glenn Beck's website they have a list of dozens and dozens of Charities collecting for the Tsunami victims, and they are ranked according to he Actual Percentage of what you donate that will go directly to the victims in SouthEast Asia. (You will be shocked to see what charities are at the BOTTOM of that list!!)

% ranked LIST of Charities for donating

On his list Glen is only posting the % for the "Program Expenses" and the % for the "Administration Expenses" To see the how the entire 100% might go (if some were to go beyond those two catagories) Then you simply click on the Charity Nav Profile Link for that charity.
In some cases the remaining portion (not shown in Program or Administrative Expenses, is going into support their Fundraising Efforts.

FYI - They define these terms as: Program Expenses: This measure reflects what percent of its total budget a charity spends on the programs and services it exists to deliver. Dividing a charity's program expenses by its total functional expenses yields this percentage

Administration Expenses: This measure reflects what percent of its total budget a charity spends on overhead, administrative staff and associated costs, and organizational meetings. Dividing a charity's administration expenses by its total functional expenses yields this percentage

Fundraising Expenses: This measure reflects what a charity spends to raise money. Fundraising expenses can include campaign printing, publicity, mailing, and staffing and costs incurred in soliciting donations, memberships, and grants.
