  • very nice colors on that one,
is it for sale?? the pop is now up to 20 on the 40d in 68fb pcgs.
these later date 68fb dimes keep slowly climbing in the pops
look at the 37p now over 20. think this is grade inflation or something else
come on merc guys what do you think

I think the concept has been discussed before, but once you get past 65FB it almost becomes coin ranking and not coin grading. Meaning, if you were to look at the 130, or so, 67FB's, you'll likely notice that 5%-15% of them are by far nicer than the rest. Since PCGS isn't going to say that 50% of the ones they graded as 67FB's submitted by their friendlies are really not 67FB's, the only logical thing to say is that the really nice ones must be 68FB's. Lucky for them, they still have 2 grades to go...as you will see this continue to happen even with 68FB's -- it's only a matter of time before you start seeing 69FB's.

This is why I've developed an opinion that there will become pent up demand for high-end, lower graded (65FB, 66FB and 67FB) coins...as people will try to resubmit these coins because the grading scale in the Merc issue is beginning to move to the right. So the way I see it, "generic" coins for the grade will actually go down in price (dealers will have a harder time moving them) while high-end coins for the slab they're in will command a significant premium.

...or, I can just be insane image

That is a nice coin and by no means am I knocking it with the following statement.

Yes it is Gradeflation and somewhere this has got to stop. The pratice of gradeflation is just going to killl some collectors that paid good money for a lesser graded coin. Sorry to harp on this again but it really upsets myself when this is seen with the late common dates within this series.

  • This coin brings a tear to my eyes because it's so beautiful!

And if that merc doesn't have any ticks in the fields, it deserves every bit of that 68.

my thinking is across the lines of the 2 comments above basically I feel a 67FB or 67 for that matter is a pristine coin and should be so as such I would likely never purchase a 68.
Besides the price I wouldn't want to get carried away with the top pop issues and gradeflation 'n all. Grading is also subjective, the 67's I like are generally superior examples. JMHO for whatever it's worth.

Thanks for the kind comments. And as far as grade inflation goes, I could care less. This coin would stand apart no matter the grade on the label. I was just sharing.

    ... is it for sale??
Not right now. I'd like to enjoy it for a while, although I have been tempted concidering the market value. It's staying here for a while, though. Thanks for asking.

It sure looks nice. But I guess I'm in the gradeflation group. I guess they liked the color. I wonder if the coin was brown instead of that pretty rainbow if the coin would get the same grade???

I give it the rainbowroosie seal of approval, as well....I disagree with many above.... I think it IS a 68 and is clearly superior to a typical 67 coin....NICE!image

David, I hope you know all of us loved the dime and think it is a super coin - the comments are on the gradeflation issues, the 68 angle - RR seems to have not gotten the gist of the posts - or did you?

Think I did. I can consistently tell the difference between a 68 and a nice 67. I have no problem paying very strong money for exceptional coins. I DO have a problem with paying strong money for coins which are "plastic" gems...this coin is a REAL gem, not a "plastic" gem....NGC is more guilty of slabbing mediocre 68s which wind up as pop tops, but lack real POP....those plastic gems sell for multiples of their worth.image

No problem. I understand the grade inflation issue... and it's ultimate result. I posted the pic so others to share the pleasure of "veiwing" the coin. It's no fun having nice stuff if you cant share it with friends. I've developed quite a few friends here. My comments were made because I didnt want this to turn into some debate over grade inflation. I just wanted to let everyone see it, that's all.

  • I have no problem with this dimes grade, it looks 68 to me with super eye appeal
I was referring to some of the other 68's I have seen in the more common dates
that look like high end 67's to me, and I have seen many high end 66's in the early
dates the would be in 67 holders if they were common dates, just maybe a slightly
tighter standard in grading for the early date mercs, or at least that is what I have noticed
from pcgs, and as value goes up the standard seems to get tighter ( and I am not talking
about a few thousand in price difference either)
