It has been a long arduous process, but I have finally completed this tough set. It has taken literally years to build this set from the ground up with the cards being so hard to come by sold individually on e-bay and many other avenues. I can finally breath easily with a smile on my face knowing it has been worth the effort. I wish to personally thank all of the dealers and all the helpful collectors that have shared their knowledge of this great set. I would like to personally thank Lothar for hooking me up with the tough (as all collectors know) with the Bob Denier, Vance Law and Pete O'Brien cards. Took literally nine months to find the Pete O' Brien card that would fit into my set.
I am thinking about starting the 1990 Donruss set next, but I need to evaluate whether I have the time and the patience to start this set. For now I will just relax, pat myself on the back and say 'HORRAY for me'.

<< <i>Please tell me this is a January Fools Joke. >>
Apparently not. After what I went through in the late 80s and all of that money on junk cards, I thought I would never see this day...
<< <i>And don't forget me I turned you onto that 13 year old that had 63 raw cards in Tawain. >>
I'm sorry Boggs forgot to mention that great tip. Unfortunately I could only use 15 of them for my set.
softparade,
for someone who is as fussy as you are (a good thing) you'd be surprised just how hard a mid-late 80's set can be in gem-mint condition, perfectly centered. The good news is it's cheap enough product to cut your losses and try again...unlike 78's.
dgf
is it PSA graded? or raw.
I agree with DGF those sets from the 80's can be tuff to compile in Gem Mint condition. If I was to do one I think Id pick 1990 as that is a most colorful set sorta reminds me of the 75 set. I have prolly 10.000 cards yet have only 1 Saberhagen. I do of course have a set that I hand coallated <sp> using the best example I had. Actually I have every set from 1980 up to and including 1991 in Topps and Fleer and Donruss from 83 til 90
in any event Jay great job!

How did you know I was fussy
I like mid 80's Topps. Especially 85 and 87. I have a good amount of unopened product. When and if I finish my 78 set, I will go FORWARD most likely and not back

<< <i>None of the cards are graded. I just thought completing a set would be quite an accomplishment. >>
Ummm...nevermind.
(You might want to update your sig if you're going to brag about this.)
88 Topps has at least five I can think of; McGwire and Murray Record breakers, Al Lieter, K. Comstock, and a checklist card with different players listed on one number.
<< <i>Why do the cards have to be graded to constitute a nice set ?? I throughly enjoyed putting the set together and it was very challenging. >>
Everybody like to collect whatever makes them happy.
With that said, 1988 Topps would only make me happy if I was down to the piggy bank for funds

I didn't know about the variations, don't tell me I have more cards to complete the set.
<< <i>Why do the cards have to be graded to constitute a nice set ?? I throughly enjoyed putting the set together and it was very challenging. >>
I would be the first one to applaud a nice raw set (since I don't think a fully graded major set is logical), but "very challenging"?? 1952 is very challenging, 1988 is trial and error.
But then again, I still don't know if this is a joke or not. If so, then the laugh is on me.

Why are you against the graded major set? Just the cost? or is it something else?

<< <i>Why are you against the graded major set? Just the cost? or is it something else? >>
Some people would say it's the grading inconsistencies but to me, it's the hundreds of $2-$4 commons in $10-$12 plastic slabs that are still $2-$4 commons. So I guess it is cost but also the "buy the holder, not the card" that the Registry competition implies.
By the way, I need to amend my statement: 1952 is very challenging, 1967 is challenging, 1988 is trial and error.

well then maybe you should collect a set like me where slabbed commons ARE $2 - $4
seriously, I'm not sure if I will ever tackle a pre 1975 full set for the reason you give.

I pm'd you about the 71 topps you need. I'll send them to you if you just pay for shipping and the bubble mailer. There's 13 in total. You may need to turn your pm's on. By the way, I think an 88 set with all the hof'ers graded 10 would be pretty neat to own even though I know this was a joke.
