Anybody know anything about this Canadian token?

This is another of my recent local coin shop buying spree. I kinda like it. Paid all of $2 for it.

Bank of Upper Canada Token - 1857, values according to 2004 ed. of "Coins of Canada" by Haxby & Willey:

    VG $3.00, F $5.00, VF $10.00, EF $20.00, UNC $125.00

Yours looks VF-ish to me, maybe a bit higher, so looks like you got a great deal image

Bank of Upper Canada 1/2 penny token with the beginning of a hole on the reverse image

Catalogued as Breton #720, Charlton PC-5D

The Bank of Upper Canada was organized in 1820. The order for the copper for the tokens was placed through Rowe, Kentish & Co. whose initials appear on the Obverse. The tokens of 1850 were struck at the Royal Mint bud did not arrive in Canada until 1851. The Royal Mint also began the coinage of 1852 but was unable to complete the order and contracted the work to Ralph Heaton & Co. of Birmingham. The coinage of 1854 & 1857 was also the work of the Heaton Mint. The dies for the tokens were cut by John Pinches.

Very cool token! I would guess aEF except for the hole.

Thanks for the info. What's the hole, the gouge out of the center of the top flower? Looks a bit cleaned up there also.

Yes, it looks like the center of the flower above the crown has been worked on.

I have an 1850 half-penny token in my collection, yours is nicer though image

It's an extremely common date of an extremely common token. Most are in lower
grade though and this one is nice enough to get some collector interest.

St. George and the Dragon 1/2 penny token from the Bank of Upper Canada, Province of Canada. This series of tokens are dated 1850, 1852, 1854, and 1857 and were issued in half and one penny denominations, with 1857 being the most common. If not for the hole start it would be a VF+ token.

It is also a late die state. Pretty near to die failure. Notice the die crack starting to the right of K in BANK and travelling counter clockwise to the base of the 7 in the date. There are also die cracks at the tops of the letters UPP, the left side of N and around the D of CANADA. Also a diagonal crack from the lower fore leg extending thru the tail of the dragon across the hoof and into the ground.

There has been a lot of polishing too. St. Georges left arm and fist holding the reins appears as a lump, the sword is disconnected from the grip (forgot what the handle thingie is called), the left rear leg of the horse is not attached to its body, neither is its tail.

Here's a scan of my Penny showing more detail:
