What do you do when a PCGS slabbed coin has PVC on it?

I bought a PCGS slabbed Peace $ (1925) in an old rattle holder -- see below:

The toning on the right side is nice, but notice the 2 specs on the eagle and one by the "e" -- they are PVC.

What to do???

Send it to PCGS. Get money or reslabbed without the PVC.

How can it be reslabbed without PVC? Are you saying they would crack it and bathe in acetone and then reslab, or should I crack it clean with acetone and resend?

I don't want to be out a slabbing/grading fee if I don't have to -- Lord knows I've donated enough to them...I'd like to get them to pick up the tab (albeit for shipping, which I'd pay for)

    Please elaborate.

    Thanks!

Call them and get a definite answer.
  • Just send for the grade guarantee, and get your money back... if it is PVC... you don't want to acetone it, and then there still be pitting, and it be BBed for damage, and be completely out the value, plus grading fees...

    Here's a beauty. It's a 1947 MS64. Yep a real high ender.

    Just look at the colors.

When I send it in do I need to mark the box Grade Gaurantee."

I'm figuring it's worth big bucks.

Spoke to Sandy at PCGS just a bit ago. Here's the scoop:

    - submit for downgrade/resubmission with a $25 fee

+ in any event they will crack the coin

+ if there is PVC on it and they can clean it without damaging the coin or taking the coin down 1 grade, they will and will re-holder ... and refund the $25 fee

+ if there is PVC on it and they can't get if off without damaging the coin or taking the coin down 1 or more grades, they will either buy the coin back from me or replace it with a like one -- it must have a twin somewhere image -- and refund my $25

+ if they look at the coin and there is no PVC on it, they will regrade (but not downgrade) and reholder the coin and keep my $25

I'll give it a shot and let you know how I make out.

...at the very least I might have discovered a loophole to go around the new pricing schedule -- submitting only one coin and paying $25 instead of $30

    merc..
Thanks for the info. i'm sure it will help some members out.

I'm going to hold onto mine, I don't think a '47 in ms64 brings anything over a grand anyways. I'm just goin to whatch the green stuff grow. there's so much pvc on this coin(both sides) that you can see the crystals sprouting up. Does any one know a way to help this stuff grow faster?
    Thanks
