Game Used Cards

Hi all. My first post on the Sports Cards forum. image I mostly collect coins, but every now and then I like to see what is happening with sports cards.

This last Sunday I stopped by a sports card show and saw something I had never seen called "Game Used Cards". Most of you I imagine know I'm speaking of a card with a pictured athlete along with piece of jersey or bat imbedded in the card that was supposedly used by the athlete during a game. I just glanced over it since I didn't have a lot of time to spend there, but I wish I had taken the time to ask some questions and take a better look.

I thought that those cards were pretty cool and I'm thinking about going back and buying one or two just for the heck of it. My only concern is the authenticity of the piece of jersey or bat. Seems like the card maker can just put any piece of scrap jersey or bat in the card, but I would think such fradulent practices would have been exposed by now.

Anyway, just wondered what you all think of these Game Used cards. Like 'em? Hate 'em? Just curious. image

Modern collectors like them. Older Vintage collectors hate them. You form you're own opinion , seems like yo uhave. I would buy them off ebay much cheaper.
Unless you can find them in a bargin bin at a show. I currently have over 100 Wade Boggs HOF'er Game cards. I always wanted to say that HOF'er Wade Boggs!!!!!!!!! And welcome!!!....Vargha...kidding

I like the autographs. I don't think that will ever get old. A few of the jersey/bat cards are cool too, but I have to admit, after picking a few up a few of these, I'm tired of the gimmick already. It's really tacky and in some cases, it just doesn't feel right. An example being Donruss (or was it Upper Deck?) paying over a quarter of a million dollars for a rare Ruth jersey and then cutting it up into tiny swatches when it should be hanging in a museum just doesn't seem right.

One argument is that it allows regular fans the opportunity to own a piece of the Babe, but I think what's lost in sight is that a rare treasure has been destroyed forever. With modern, active players, this is not an issue 'cause there's plenty of jerseys and other pieces of equipment available, but you don't do this with a Ruth, Williams, Maris, or Mantle.

This is probably one of the few in my collection that I actually like and I like primarily because of the autograph, not all the other crap.

game used cards are like gold plated state quarters

if you buy them though, make sure its very cheap, like a couple of bucks or something, they are cute gimmicks at best.

certified autographs are a little better, but make sure that it is signed on the actual card instead of a sticker and dont pay much either.

most of this cards are serially limited, usually around 200 or so copies, both autos and game used cards are pretty much legit since they come from huge companies and they would not risk the embarrasment of getting caught with a fake.

remember, make sure you dont spend a lot on these cards, they usually drop in value every single year.

Wow. image That's crazy. Yeah, there's something not right about ripping up a rare jersey. At least with modern players there are still countless game jerseys still available.

Calleocho thanks for the tip on the signatures. I think I saw the Game Used cards available for $5.00 each for some of the more popular players. That's about as much as I'd pay for one of them.

    Hi,
I prefer the autographed cards over the game used cards, although I do admit there are some nice game used cards out there.

  • At one point I collected a few game used back when they first appeared '96 ish. Then became too everyday
to bother with. Having said that, a game-used card WITH an autograph is much more appealing depending
on the player. Personally, I don't bother anymore simply because I hate the silver stickers that are now
used for autographs. Like anything else, collect if you like them not to make $$. Just my 2 cents
