Protecting my cards?

I've recently heard that screwdown cases can actually damage the corners and surface of a non-graded card. I just bought these from bcwsupplies. Does anyone know if these will actually do more harm than good to my cards? What other cases can I use that look nice and protect the card?

Also, does it bother anyone else that many of the PSA graded cards move around in the case?

There have been reports that screwdowns — over time — will cause the card to stick, become impregnated to the plastic, and, thus, when it is removed, the card sticks and paper comes off with the plastic. There was a widely-publicized report that someone had a '54 Topps Aaron in mint condition and the screwdown ruined it. I am only telling you what I've heard as I have stayed away from them.

Also, the design of a PSA holder does not allow the corners to touch any plastic. If the cards move, it would not damage the card.

For ungraded cards, I use mylar card sleeves and then put them in a rigid plastic holder.

screw downs WILL damage your card if its screwed too tight.. like Billa said, stay away from them unless they have a "recessed" space for the card to sit in..

    pandrews,

thank you for pointing that out, recessed space is crucial.

  • Ok, thanks. So I guess something like this would be better?
  • I think the ultra-pro's are better. They also have new ones with a diamond cut to protect the corners.

Where do you get mylar sleeves? I had some samples a few years ago,but lost the name of the company. Most of the ones I see now are expensive.
    Thanks
  • I have a ARod multi color patch card that got messed up by a screwdown. It was the type MADE for thick cards too.

I thought the non-recessed screwdowns were okay
as long as you used a penny sleeve. I used to use those
10 + years ago before all the new fancy stuff showed up and have
never had any problems as longs as a penny sleeve was used.
I agree that non-recessed w/out penny sleeves will damage your
cards. I think nowadays, there is no reason to even buy 1/2 inch
or 1 inch monster screw downs (those crack me up and look bullet proof?)
to hold expensive cards. They take up too much room for storage.
I prefer the magtite recessed holders myself. No screwdrivers needed,
and they protect the corners. They also fit perfect in team bags to
    protect from scratches.
  • I definitely like the Ultra-Pro One Touch Holders. But its also essential to put a team bag over it to secure the holder so if you in case drop the holder, it won't break apart.

I use to like the Pro-Mold screwdowns, but was also afriad/concern that in the long run, might damage the surface to/of the card.

Those one-touch holders are nice - but as a rule, I wouldn't use a screwdown holder. If I had to, the recessed type is the only way to go. If I have a card, not graded, it is usually in the standard penny sleeve / toploader saver.

  • Is there anything comparable to the Ultra-Pro One-Touch holders for cards early than 1957, like 1952 topps ungraded cards?
