New arrival and guess the grade - 1924 Peace Dollar >>>Grade Posted<<<

This came in yesterday. The marks you see to the left of the 4 in the date are on the holder, not the coin.

  • AU58 or MS65. I can't tell whether that's rub on the curls or eagle's right wing. I'm leaning toward MS, but this isn't my bag.

Real nice MS64. Too bad it has that hit on the wing... perhaps MS66 without it.

Nice 64 (because of the marks on the hair and eagle's wing).

    I'd go MS65*. That's a beauty.

It's a nice coin -- I would grade a it 65 because of the hit on eagle's wing...it's noticable. Although, if the strike is as weak as the scan looks I'd grade it a 64 -- typically that date doesn't have a real weak strike so I'd take a point off for that.

    ....and the grade is???

I can't grade these things even when you show me the grade first. That said, it looks like a 65 to me.

Is that a nice little did crack I see up there in the B of LIBERTY?
    When in doubt, don't.

That would be nice, but unfortunately it's just another mark on the holder.

I will guess it's an MS-64 only because of a slightly weak strike on the reverse -- otherwise looks MS-65 as for very few contact marks.

    Very pretty Eric! image

I'll go out on a limb and say MS66. That coin has some serious luster and looks VERY clean to me.

  • Without reading any of the responses so far i'm going to stick my neck out and say MS65.

I see what looks like a hit on the reverse / Eagles wing, and something in Lady Libertys hair below the B in LIBERTY.

  • 65. Nice Coin!
  • You did say"guess the grade", so my wag is MS65.

I bought this coin from Steve of PQDollars. I had made a mistake and sold all my Peace Dollars, and I wanted a nice one to practice with on the camera since Peace Dollars are quite a bit different in imaging compared to Morgans. Steve told me it was really PQ and looked like a 5 to him, and I agree. I'm pretty confident that if I busted this coin out it would come back in a 5 holder, but for a common date it's not worth the trouble. The bottom line is it's a beautiful coin, no matter what's on the holder.

Eric: I agree with you. image

I always prefer to purchase coins that are solid for the grade, and perhaps liner coins with a shot at the next higher grade. I don't play the upgrade game, but enjoy beautiful coins no matter what holder or grade they are.

I am more concerned about the grade when negotiating price and determining market value of a coin when considering a purchase.

I've picked up a number of coins from Steve and Larry (PQDollars) -- just recently 2 nice Peace $ -- a 25-S 64 in an older green 64 holder and a 34-d 64. Both coins were very nice for the grade.

Disclaimer: I do not work for them (PQDollars), nor am I related to them, nor do I live in the same time zone as them...nor have I ever met them, etc. image

They're straight shooters with no hype. I've bought and sold with them many times with no trouble.
