Medium Norwegian estate - need help

I have posted on thin forum ones before, and will be happy if anybody can help.

I am going through quite a lot of coins from a Norwegian/American estate, and have problems with some of them. I have not found anything about this large S mintmarks on the QD from 1947, but I guess a lot of you know this coin.

(The scan is horrible!)

  • It was made after the coin left the mint.....looks like a counter stamp to me of some kind????

Does not add to the value of the coin and it's actually considered damage, but on a 1947 circulated quarter it doesn't matter anyway. image

The coin is still only worth Silver Melt....maybe a little over a dollar US.

Your scan is fine. That "S" is not a mintmark, but some type of punch that someone applied to the coin. It wasn't made that way so most people would consider it damage.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Now that's a big S! As others will no doubt confirm, it's some sort of counterstamp, applied after the coin left the mint. The coin, in that condition, is worth little more than the silver in it.
  • Yes......beat you both!!!!!!! image

  • Thank you for extremely quick replies.
It was a miss ( I am an amateur).
But there is many more coins, and I will ask you about other coins later.

    Thank you!
