The US Mint will be accepting corporate sponsorship begining in the 2nd quarter of 2005. For a certain fee, a corporation can have a small counterstamp pressed into a number of coins. The number of coins "counterstamped" will vary as to the amount of the fee charged. Initially, the offer is only good for Sac dollars. The mint decided it might be a way to spur the use of the lightly circulated coin.

Good grief! What's next with these people? For a fee, they will strike coins with your portrait on the obverse? Will we be seeing a Bill Gates Quarter by next year?? We are now seeing the extremity of capitalism. Barf.

Just for that, no Toyota Sac for you.

May I have Siemens Sac instead?
Seriously, is this a joke (per Flaminios suggestion)???
Why would a company pay the mint for advertising rights when they could just buy 100,000 Sacagaweas at face value, then add their own counterstamp? That's how it was done in the good old days. Or, is it still illegal to deface U.S. currency..........unless the U.S. Mint does the defacing??

Shortly thereafter will be the first report of coinage infected by a virus!
Well, I did make it up if that's what you mean.

It isn't illegal to deface currency for advertising purposes, surprisingly. Providing that the currency is not left in a state that it is 'unfit to be re-issued'. I'm sure the guys over in the paper money forum know all about this

sadly, this is nothing new. many of the ultra rarities or high grade issues of "wanted/needed" coins would be unknown if it weren't for shenanigans at the Mint during the 1800's. many of the odd and hard to imagine errors more than likely came about in the same fashion.
while i do indeed think Mark is pulling our collective leg, minting for profit is certainly nothing new.

Is that the one the US Government was running for awhile? I could be wrong, might have been a different bordello. (True story, the IRS seized the business for back taxes and the government found itself in the business of running a house of prostitution for about two months before they finally closed it down and sold off the assets.)
