Clueless Needs Baseball Card Help

Ok, some of you may already know me from the Open Forums, but I am a coin collector. But, my mom's Co-Worker gave me a 2 foot box of Baseball cards for me to sell on EBay, and of course, I want to get the most money out of it for her. So, I'm looking for some advice and tips. What kind of things am I looking for that may be valuable? Big Name Players? Speciality Type Cards? etc. etc. And also, is there a good, accurate price guide online? I don't know exactly how you can tell what the year of the cards is, but looking at copyright dates, most are from throughout the 90s. I picked out some random cards, mostly names I recognized... image I can provide pictures, and you might be able to help me out some, picking out what is what... but, here's some cards... Oh, and all the dates, are just what the copyright date says... and almost all of the cards are in mint condition, look like they came right out of the packs...

  • I did not see anything at first glance that jumped out as rare or high dollar. I think most of this stuff is common cards which will get common prices. It might be worth while to send it all back. The effort required here to get any significant dollar amount is overwhelming. Usually more effort gets more return, but with a large group of commons.....not worth your while. This might be a case where someone thinks they have a small goldmine, and in reality you find out the hard way after a lot of time invested that you might be better off keeping 20 cards and donating the rest to a local hospital.
  • Honestly, I doubt you could list these for $0.01 and free shipping and get any bids...
  • Now that that's out of the way... anyone care to actually answer the questions I asked?

The cards you listed are not worth your time to list. They are worth pennies.

    Dear jrgman,

With all due respect to you, the several replies you received were not being sarcastic. They simply were trying to tell you that with what you have, it is not worth the time to sell the cards, list them, or even take the time to answer the questions. But, go to your local book store and pick up a copy of Tuff Stuff and start from there. Best wishes,

    Bill
  • So then... it's not worth your time, to enlighten someone, a potential collector, with simple questions? Then I'd hate to be a newbie coming on here wanting to learn more about collecting...

Thanks for your lack of time...

  • If you want to put in the effort, get a price guide and price the cards. Beckett and SMR are most commonly used. The cards you listed by themselves wont fetch anything on E-bay. But, you may have some cards you failed to list that may have some worth. If you have mainly 90's cards, look mainly for rookie cards and relatively scarce inserts...that's where most of the money is concentrated in modern cards. Insert cards usually have as its card number something like "R9" or "3 of 18" rather than a straight number like 345 or 15. Rookie cards are more difficult to identify if you're not in tune with the hobby. A card may say something like "Rookie prospect" or "Top Rookie" but it's not a rookie card.

If you end up having a bunch of commons, you have three options. You can not sell them because it's not worth the time and effort. You can package cards of one player together and sell them as a set (for instance, a set of 15 randy johnson cards or tino martinez cards). You might get a buyer who is really into bernie williams or jeff kent. Of course, even in this case, dont expect to get big money....i see packages like these sold on ebay for like $1-$3. Or you can go the shady route: Sell the cards in a dutch auction advertising "Big Name Cards" or sell the entire box and being vague about what's inside. In my naivety, i bought cards in dutch auctions when i came back to the hobby. All i got were worthless cards. The dealer described the supposedly random nature of the selection of cards...and i wasnt lucky. I did give him a neutral feedback as opposed to a positive because his particular auction description was misleading....but i check his status every once and awhile...and he's still selling cards through his dutch auctions by the boatload.

    Hope that helped.

Listen, lighten up a little bit.

Let's say your friend bought coffee each morning at the 7-11. He saved his change in his car for a week or two and then came in to you and said, "Sell these coins on ebay for me."

Naturally, you would say, "Friend, those are common coins, no one has any interest in them, they are not in demand and it isn't worth the effort."

Now, simply put, if you want to learn about cards and collecting, take one of your cards and do a search on ebay to see if it comes up. It is sort of like looking for a worn 2002 penny. Now type in a search for a 1884 BU CC silver dollar. Now that's the deal, and that's the story.

This is the kind of information I was looking for...

if a friend came to me knowing nothing about coins, with a large pile, I would certainly tell them it might not be worth the time and effort, but, it could be worth the effort to make the search... for instance, Type II Lincoln Cents from 1998, 1999, and 2000, in proper grades, several hundred dollars... and these cents are supposed to be common right?!

Thank you MajorDanby for your time, and help, you've at least given me a place to start, which is more than can be said about the rest of the responses.

www.beckett.com has an online "price guide".. but as you know it is only a guide, and many time it is way off base with its prices..

Guys, remind me not to get involved, it only comes back to hurt me every time. When will I learn to mind my own business? and to quit sticking up for others.
  • I forgot to mention that the amount of insert cards produced by card companies in the 90's and going forward reaches infinity. Get a beckett price guide and once you hit somewhere around 95-96, you will notice the endless number of inserts produced by companies. Some of these (mainly those that are scarce) have kept their value...a lot really haven't. Unless someone has a thing for diamond kings or really loves ivan rodriguez...a 1995 ivan rodriguez diamond king insert will not fetch anything near what beckett lists it.

The "in" inserts these days are autographs and game used cards. Autograph cards are easy to identify. Game used cards are those with a piece of material attached to the card...like a piece of a bat or jersey. As long as you have a star player, you can probably fetch a decent amount for these type of inserts.

And the only way to recognize a rookie is simply getting a price guide and looking it up.

Speaking of coins, one of my co-workers was rummaging around in the warehouse where they put all the old office furniture in the 19teens. They found a roll of old pennies, really shiny, like new that are dated 1909 S, and they have a little VDB or something on them unlike other pennies I've seen. Since the new pennies have the Lincoln memorial on the back and these pennies have wheat stalks on them I told my co-worker he could probably get a nickel each for them.

Great way to turn people away from the hobby.

Interestingly most of you guy have less than 100 posts!..real "old timers".

Next time you want to ask about the value or for an opinion of a card or where you can find something, you may want to follow your own advice. LOOK IT UP!! instead of wasting everyone's time.

    habs,

that wasn't really fair to the guys who took the time to respond. The cards were listed as examples of the cards he was inquiring about. Several of the guys told him the cards he listed were worth nothing and the point was, it wasn't worth the effort based on the cards he listed. Now, if he comes back after all of this back and forth chatter, and finds out he has a $1,000 jersey card or something, then his inquiries paid off . . .and the purpose of this forum served its purpose to the max! God, everyone needs to lighten up, habs. And, now because some of us who responded are not veterans like you, then you threaten us with not responding to our questions.

    Thank you,

Priceguides for sportscards like priceguides for coins are not always accurate. Sportscards like coins are worth as much as someone is willing to pay. If you want to know the true value of your cards, scan them and list them on ebay starting at $.01 and see where they go.

I know this, but at least they can show me some relative rarity at least to some degree, and I can pull out the cards that might be worth more, and can sell them on an individual basis... but, if I tried to sell them all individually, obviously a lot would only sell for a cent, or not cell, and I'd be eating a lot in EBay fees...

  • Since when did the number of posts on this board qualify expertise? Since when did telling the truth in a polite way become offensive? If this runs someone out of the hobby, so be it.

The thing is, that I ask questions, hoping for answers, and the only answer I get is, "This is crap, and you're not worth the time to answer your questions."

Several had responded about resources online and in print to determine the priceguide values. However, with the cards that you listed, I think many here can see that listing those cards will be more trouble than they are worth. Sorry if you do not like that answer. Maybe you can wait for a free listing day to come around on ebay.
  • That wasn't the problem... where do you see in the first two replies, any sort of answer to serious questions I asked? And in fact, there are still questions nobody has actually answered... and I would think they really are basic facts about sportscards... I expected there'd be plenty of common stuff in this box that wouldn't be worth the listing fee... but, I was looking for the knowledge to be able to at least make a decent attempt at identifying cards that might be worth selling individually... and look at the answers I get...

    Dear jr man,

No, that is not true. No one insinuated that "you" are not worth the time. I doubt that any of the guys I met here would take that attitude. They were referring to the representation of the cards you listed . . . and putting it honestly, they aren't worth anything, but, that's not saying you don't have a sleeper in the mix. Now, being a coin collector, you know that there are references to find out value. If Gramma gave me a jar of coins, you bet I would be on the internet checking prices as fast as you could screw the top off.

    Thanks,

    Bill

    JrGman,

in 1998, the only cards from the "Collector's Choice" set that might command decent prices are called "StarQuest".. if you have a "StarQuest: Home Run" Cal Ripken Jr, it lists at $100.00.. "common" cards list at $12.00 each..

Condition is the most important factor, but you already knew this. I think you have already looked at the condition of the card since you mention they look like they came right out of packs. Look for big name players and hot rookies. Also look for insert cards, in particular those that are numbered in the back with very low production numbers. (ie 1 or 1, 1 or 10, 1 of 25) Look for autographs from big name players and from hot rookies.

As far as online priceguides, Beckett.com has one, but I think most of the cards that you listed will not be on the online priceguide. Best of luck to you.

    Koby,
you can actually find prices for just about any card by using the Beckett Online price guide.. i use it for a checklist, and of course, some price references..

Look out for the fighters with rolls of quarter in their fists.
  • When someone arrives asking questions they are warmly greated and made to feel comfortable. Reading this thread I can see why it became defensive. Do a search on the word "welcome" in the coin forum and see how they act. Joe

If you are willing to put in the time to search card values one at a time, Beckett has a free online price guide.

The best way to search this, considering your knowledge of cards, is to input the player name and card number, and if it comes back with multiple matches, to check the most likely one.

If you have mainly '90s material, the monthly Beckett price guide is not likely to be of much help - it now omits many sets entirely, and the quarterly price guide (Baseball Card Plus) is rather expensive considering the likely value and saleability of most of the cards.

    Thank you carew4me, . . . !!!!!!!

What an eye opener that link in the coin forum you provided would wake us all up. I was shocked at the responses. At least, we can pat ourselves on the back for giving intelligent responses here.

But, maybe I'm wrong, and we just don't get it. Perhaps we should be counting our rolls of BU silver dollars . . . hey, I wonder if stacks of twenty 1953 Topps PSA 8 Mickey Mantles are as prevalent as those rolls of 1889 CC silver dollars that every coin collector googles over?

    I am truly amazed.

    Guys,

you know . . . things were getting a little slow on the board, so, I think Joe O. wanted to spice it up by posting the "I found a box of 1999 cards and I think they are worth a million dollars, help me out" post just to get us going.

    Good Joe,

No, the most saddest thing is that I jumped in early to help put out the fire (fourth or fifth post) and I got sucked in and nailed for it.
