Advice please

For the first, and probably last, time I am the proud owner of a PSA 10 1/1 star card. I wish I could say it was a '57 Mays or some such thing, but I will have to settle for a 1981 Donruss Pete Rose (#131 - "see card 371 on back"). SMR shows a $300 value; I'd be thrilled to get anything close to that, but equally disappointed to get only a small fraction. On almost all of my ebay auctions, I just start the bidding at $0.99 with no reserve and let the chips fall where they may but I'm nervous about doing that with this one. If you were selling this card, how would you set up the auction (starting bid, reserve, BIN)?

In general, I think setting the auction low and let the market take care of the rest is the best thing to do. You will be surprised sometimes and be disappointed other times, but it all evens out.

So, before putting this on ebay, or even after, alert the people on the 1981 Donruss set registry what you are adding. Some of those guys will be interested in it to get a higher ranking in their set registry. That's the way to handle it.

Eighties low pop PSA 10's are a crapshoot - sometimes, you get a nice price on them, other times you couldn't get someone to pour water on it if it was on fire. In this case though, it is Pete Rose, and it is from a notoriously tough set for quality - so I would think you should do quite well on it regardless. There are many Pete Rose collectors that I'm sure will want it. Start with an modest opening bid (say, $49.99) and I'm sure the market will take care of the rest.

I personally hate reserve auctions and don't bid on them - many people feel the same way.

Start the bidding at a price you would be happy to sell it for. You could list it starting @ $400 several times for around $3 a pop. You make get a bid or a strong offer offline.

I recently put a 1981 Donrus Golf Ray Floyd PSA 10 on eBay. The card is only the second graded. I put it on eBay with a starting price of $180 (the current SMR). I went through the set registry and emailed all of the registrants of this set. The minimum bid was gobbled up in a few hours. I ended up with a high bid of $1,025.

Alert the Rose collectors. There are far more of them than '81 Donruss set collectors.
