They sure seem to want to get rid of the onesy-twosy submitter.

I don't see any meaningful difference between Silver and Gold membership.

Same here, I'm here on the old free silver membership plan. Does that mean their going to kick me off or will I get "downgraded" to the new Copper membership level? image

  • I was here on an old silver membership also. What a bunch of sh@!#$%&. Kind of a steep price to pay just for the boards and to be in a set registry. You already pay a price for every slabbed coin you purchase. The original submitter paid a fee. Then when you bought the coin, you repaid him, so he could submit more coins. Now you will have to pay for the honor of owning a registered coin. I was going to send a few coins in this year, but on my budget it will make it no longer feasible. I guess they really do not care for the little guy.

It's not just the new membership fees -- take a look at the grading price increases. The folks at PCGS know they are the grading service of choice for US coins and they don't really have to cater to either the small submitter or the world coin collector. Raising prices is an easy way to ration the service and clear up the backlog of submissions. It also will steer more business to big dealers. The higher the price of grading, the more risk a small collector has in submitting one or two choice coins hoping for a nice grade. That collector might now be persuaded to just sell the coin raw to a big dealer, who can then submit it and rake in the profit.

It's not just the easy way, it's about the only way. But the increase they implimented isn't enough to do that. To really cut into the backlog I would suggest doubling the submission fees.

If they go too high, they could drive some large submitters over to NGC, which would have the added effect of reducing PCGS' perceived market advantage. If big shots in the coin biz are chased over to NGC by higher prices, they would have an incentive to pump up NGC's reputation at PCGS' expense, to protect their investments.

Very true. So the trick is to raise the prices enough to start effectively reducing the backlog without driving everyone to NGC. Of course if a significant number are driven to NGC then THEIR backlog will start increasing rapidly. The real plan should not be to eliminate the backlog but to equalize the backlogs at the two services. If they are comparible there is no insentive to switch from one service to the other.
