...and here's another Morgan from yesterday's purchase at the same antique shop . Cost me $12. I bought it because I could see the crack without a loupe. Got home and found VAM-1AG in Rob Joyce's book. I'm trying to get an idea of how many there are out there... and whether it's all that rare or not.

Just so you know there's an update/listing change in the works on this vam...look at the reverse, letter 'E' of ONE. Should be a die gouge through the 'E', identical to VAM-1AA. It appears that 1AG is a later die state of 1AA. Not sure what Leroy will do here.

Please tell, what are you using to get those close-up shots???

I'm still practicing with the pictures. I'm using a National stereo microscope I received for Christmas (best gift in decades). They sell for about $200. It's set at 30x. I'm holding a small Olympus digital camera up to the left lens. The lens fits snuggly into the rubber eyepiece of the microscope. I need to work on the lighting. If I can stop spending money on coins, I will invest in a tripod and lights.
This 1AG, a 21-D VAM-9, the toned 21-S that I listed earier, an 1899-O VAM-9... all came from the same antique shop on Sunday... all $8 - $12 each. If my wife and daughter weren't tapping their toes behind me, I would have stayed for hours. They had dozens of 1921 coins.
where do you live ???
I need to come to your neckada woods to check out the antique shops

Update: Based on my submissions, Leroy Van Allen eliminated 1921-D VAM-1AG earlier this week. VAM-1AA now comes in two die states, one with just the gouge and a later die state with the gouge and obverse die break. So, Norm you found a VAM-1AA LDS !
Also, VAM-1BC (wing gouge) was eliminated, as it's was an early die state of VAM-8A...which had an identical wing gouge...which was actually documented in the die crack drawings in Rob's 1921-D book...
Sorry to anyway who lost out. I'd rather find new vams, not eliminate old ones.
