New Camera and a New Bust Half-Dime; Sorry Dial-uppers :S

Ack! I keep hitting enter too soon image

Anyways, I got a new camera, actually it's a used camera, but it's a Nikkon 4300 that I got from Eric (K6AZ) image It's been fun so far, just taken a few pics, and making adjustments... going from using an Entry Level FujiFilm A205 2.0MP to a Mid-Level 4MP camera image So, anyways, here's a picture of a new Bust Half-Dime I picked up... I realize there's damage, but I encourage you peoples to attribute it and grade it, and see if it was worth the purchase, considering the damage image

I have... but letting other's attribute it to... and see if it worth buying, considering the damage on the rim at 10 o'clock on the Obverse, and the solder damage on the reverse image

  • Huh? Anyways... No-H Jon is close, but not quite... it's actually an LM-1.1. The Reverse Die state is too early to be LM-1.2... but, LM-1.1 is an R.1 die marriage, but Logan and McCloskey called it an 'Exceedingly Rare Remarriage' So, I think it was worth buying, even the damage considered image

  • Yes, GMan is right: it is LM-1.1. The die marriage is very common, the the remarriage is impossible (well, not impossible, but tough) to find. If you look in the LM book, the plate coin is an early die state. 1831 LM-1.1 is the first use of reverse L. The reverse die was then used to strike 1830 LM-9.1 (yes an 1830 coin). After a small mintage of 1830 LM-9.1, the reverse die was reunited with 1830 obverse 1 to make more 1831 LM-1.1 half dimes. This remarriage is listed as "exceedingly rare" by Logan-McCloskey. This reverse die was then used to strike some other die marriages (both 1830 and 1831 coins). Really very interesting usage of the dies, don't you think?

    Nice score George!!

  • Just recieved an E-Mail from John McCloskey regarding the coin. He said that when he and Russ Logan sat down to catalog the coins (And they had 5 collections worth of Half-Dimes) they identified each reverse, and laid them out in emission order, to verify marriages and remarriages, and even then LM-1.1 was the toughest for them to find. He said even his example of the coin is a low-grade one.

It is a coin only a bust half dime collector could love image You have to be really into bust half dimes to be interested in the die marriages. Most will only see a damaged little coin. Strong VF details.

An excellent educational thread on bust half dimes, with much of the information coming from Dennis, now known as "numisma" on these boards
