PSA Crossing over...

I am interested in PSA...I heard they aren't as harsh on their grades as BGS is, and it's justa bout as respected as BGS. I am curious...Is what you get really worth the initiation fee?

    Stick with Booger Grading Service.
    We don't like them here.

PSA isn't more strict or lenient than BGS...it totally depends on which grader you get. With that said, IMO it's still worth it to have two companies you can submit to. I like to split up my submissions so a cranky grader can't bust the whole pot, and both companies will undergrade cards on occasion.

If you want leniency, maybe you should go with GAI? That one looks like it would get an 8.5 from beckett.

I rank PSA as the best myself, I have been tempted to crossover a card into a Global holder to get a half point upgrade but BGS never has crossed my mind.

I dont believe I have ever seen any auctions or big ticketed items at shows in a BGS holder. I think the value of a card in a PSA holder will always outweigh a similar card in a BGS holder especially when it come to vintage material.

  • One of the prominent dealers (can't remember who) had a number of GAI cards on e-bay recently. The ones I glanced at seemed overgraded. A GAI 8.5 should not have noticeable corner wear or be 75/25 centered both ways. Looks like they be grading leinetely (sp) for card dealers so they can get more cards in the marketplace. I know the one GAI card I have is overgraded.
Collecting vintage material, currently working on 1962 topps football set.
  • Certainly the SMR by itself is worth the club price (will this comment get me an extension of my membership?).

However you are correct about the respect for BGS. I respect (fear) them a great deal after destroying an eye with flying plastic shrapnel breaking out an old hockey card for crossover a few months ago.

    Laugh out loud

I can see where you're coming from, and possibly the only reason to respect BGS - the security of the holders that contain their cards.
  • these are 3 I want Crossed over:

    1985 Topps Dan Marino BGS 9 (9/9/9/9.5)
    1985 Topps Joe Montana BGS 9 (8.5/9/9/9)
