33 sport kings insanity, 38 goudeys...

As you may or may not know, i'm focused on the 38 goudey set, but these things are so few and far between its driving me nuts. (If you have any raw in 3+ or any graded i'm interested if I need em) Sooo I'm doing what we all do and thats start another set! Well, i'm partial to the pre-war goudeys so i've been workin and watchin the 33 sport kings. Another 48 card goudey set that is incredible. however, the SMR seems wwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off on this set. Over the past few months it seems to be very rare that ANY card goes for less than full SMR. It seems like if you want a shot at winning anything your looking at 150% or more. Just last night a Nat Hollman #3 PSA 6 SMR 350, sold for over 700 bucks with shipping. Another $55 common went for 127+. I'm bidding more than one grade OVER the actual grade and still losing them all. How long does it take SMR to reflect reality? In all my time so far I have one raw (probable 3) and a GAI i'm gonna crack and send in for the january special.

ALSO... are there any sure fire ways to spot reprints on the sport kings? Pretty much limiting bidding to reputable sellers is comforting, but I'm afraid I 'm not going to get enough "raw in hand" time with this set to figure it out myself.

thanks again guys,

JERO

PS: Ryan, do you have any duplicate PSA 38s? I know you had a 38 joe-D "5" on ebay a while back, and i'm interested in seeing your scans. they weren't on the board anymore, and the ebay link is too old.

I think PSA has to copy their "Bowman formula" and paste it to the Goudey rows, along with the usual multiplier for the columns. That would work, wouldn't it?

    Jero and the gang,

I've been working on my 1933 Sport Kings set for 15 years. I have 32 of the 48 cards and have found that some of the cards are extremely hard to find. In the 15 years of doing this, I have come across very few Babe Didricksons, Willie Hoppes, Jack Westropes, Max Bears, and, of course, the insanely priced Bobby Jones. I started to purchase 7s and 8s. but then the pricing went nuts, and now I settle for PSA 4s. I remember purchasing a PSA 8 common for $250, try that now! It is an extremely popular set due to the year, number of cards, uniqueness and beauty . . . they Ace Baily hockey card and Babe Didrickson cards are, in my opinion, the prettiest cards in the set, but all are miniature works of art. I have been toying with the idea of selling my 32 cards, and focusing only on my star cards, listing them for book and letting them go, but everytime I get on ebay and watch the price of these cards climb, I second guess myself. Yes, the prices listed in SMR are waaaay to low. As stated previously on another thread, 707 sportscards told me they will purchase the cards for resale at SMR prices.

Jero, what cards do you have?

Also, Jero, the reprints are glossy and clearly state reprint on back. No mistake in telling the two apart.
  • I only have the Richards #23 and the Holman #3. The holman is a probable 4 the Richards is a probable 3. Picked up the richards for under 30 bucks, the Holman for 190. It seems on ebay there are tons of non-labeled reprints of the babe that are purposefully worn but obvious fakes since they sell for a few bucks. Any other help on the reprint identification besides the glossy and "reprint". These don't have it, and i'm sure they are reprints.

    Thanks,

    JERO

The card stock is not the same. The reprints have a harder finish than the original 1933, and the print image is much smoother. But, on ebay it would be difficult to tell. As always, buyer beware, and as always, unless I know who I am dealing with, I do not pay over $20-$30 for a raw card. At that price, I'll take the gamble, Being into the Sport Kings for 15 years, I have not known, nor have I heard of a rip-off involving the reprints. I guess if you suspect a reprint, contact the seller and ask him if it says reprint on the back. Also, if the price for a Ruth Sport King is a only a few dollars, then obviously it is a reprint.

I've been looking for Sport Kings in about PSA 5 for a few months now, and they seem to be going for a minimum of about $125. SMR is way off on these, and at this point I think it's much much easier to get them raw- Ex isn't that hard to find, and raw is so much less you could buy a bunch, have a few grade out, and still be way ahead of the game.
I had dinner with a few guys (dealers, collectors, grading guys) and they all said there seemed to be almost a desparate rush to pre WW2 material, with prices escalating rapidly. This is very evident in the Sport Kings I've seen come up for auction lately.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

    Steve-
Thanks, but no reminder needed. Seth has been one of my favorite auction houses to deal with since his first one a few years ago. Excellent service, accurate grading and fast shipping. Best of luck on your lots, although I hope they get overlookedimage

  • Billa,
Not all reprints from this set say reprint on the back - I believe several versions have been produced over the years. There was an article in Vintage Beckett? a few years back that told you how to spot the real McCoy. It's not too difficult if you have them in hand but can be tricky on ebay.
