Here is the eighth in a limited series, but it comes with a poll.

Subject: 1859 sixpence, one of my former sig line coins.

I've already posted my favorite shot to the "museum," but would like your opinion and comments.

I voted #2 because it shows more depth.

Try left topside lighting and you'll end up with the best of 2 & 3....image

Do you have a mini-tripod and an "OTT-LITE" (or a Reveal bulb)? Those are the minimum items you need to do it - and that is what I use. Guys like cacheman use a copy stand to improve the repeatability even further.

#2 - looks like it shows the finest detail of the three, although I like the lustre on #3 a bit better.

Tough choice..Send me the coin so I can get a better lookimage
I'll have to go with number 2 by a slim margin. Doesn't show the luster, but it highlights the depth.

Guess I'm not the only one that likes the depth of #2.

It was a hard call between #2 and #3, but I voted #2.

Interesting, most of the #2 voters explained why (or that) they liked #2. Who likes #3 and why?

I like (and voted for) #2 because it seems to show more detail and has a bit of a warm look to it. I like #3 because it shows off the coins luster in a more natural way.

I voted for 3. The coin seems to have more lustre and just looks better to me...

It seems that both are evenly liked still.

I personally prefer #3 because the picture, while not having the depth of focus of #2, shows exactly what the coin's color looks like.

I have found that direct lighting is better for coins with toning and accurately captures the color, while topside (or leftside) lighting does a better job with both silver and bronze coins having full lustre.

Here is another "topside" lighting example. This would look awful if direct lighting was used:

So ... how about the "left topside view" that Cache suggested? Do we get a look-see for comparison?
