Coin Show Report - Parsippany, NJ

I went to the monthly, 80-dealer show in Parsippany, NJ as usual today. Right away, I bumped into Airplanenut and Wihlborg doing show-and-tell just outside the front door and made the acquaintance of Bustman, who they had roped in, too. I can tell that Wihlborg needs to buy some new coins - he was still showing off those same old tarnished MS-67 commems! (Just kidding!)
As I was walking the floor, I heard one dealer tell another that he was happy that the show was busier than he expected - he thought it'd be quiet due to the holiday weekend. I thought that floor traffic was actually a bit less than usual - it was still hard to get down the aisles, though! It seemed like a lot of business was being done - the wholesalers were walking around with full boxes that they were showing to dealers - who were buying. I saw a fair amount of collector buying, too. I heard a couple of dealers say that they had bought a lot of coins recently and therefore needed to do some selling - sounds like the higher prices have brought a lot of coins out of hiding.
I'm still seeing what seems like a lot of flowing hair and draped Bust dollars, as well as draped Bust and Bust halves.
I didn't get that good a picture of the show, because I spent a lot of time at Tom Hyland's table, looking through his new Bust halves (along with Bustman). I picked up a nice raw XF-45 1809 (with the IIII edge) and managed to restrain myself from spending my next couple of month's budget by not buying a nice raw Fine 1806 quarter and a really pretty toned NGC-58 1849-O half. (Tom did have a really original-looking 1807 half in raw Good as well as a totally original, blue-toned 1823 half in raw VF+ that I was attracted too, as well.)
It was also nice to see that Jon Lerner from Scarsdale Coins bravely made the journey across the mighty Hudson River to join us in "Joisy".
Based on what I saw today, FUN should be hopping and the White Plains show in three weeks should be busy, too!

Anyhoo, I had one main objective today--to find a flowing hair half. I found a few 1795s, but they were either too worn for me (one VG was missing a lot of detail near the periphery, so I decided to pass on it), or too nice (a $1400 F+ I would have taken in a heartbeat, had I had the money). I also saw a beautiful 1794... but, yeah
My not as main objective was to show off some of my coins to Wihlborg and Bustman (DaveG just happened to pop by... he was an afterthought )... of course, what I really wanted to do was tease Bustman with my not-for-sale 1958-D half. Okay... so it was for sale... and it's gone on to a better place now He also took a nice buffalo endroller I made over the summer (1937 PCGS MS66) from my hands.
Later in the day, I also sold a toned morgan--didn't bring it with the intention of selling, but it made a nice contribution to the flowing hair fund. I also bought a toned silver onza (that's the Mexican silver each equivalent) and a green reverse (natural) 1964 JFK that's probably around MS64... it was too cheap to not buy.
I also spent a lot of time with John Lerner at Scarsdale Coin... he has some great signs in his case, such as, "If you are rude, irritable, or just plain mean, a $10 fee with be charged for putting up with you" and "Buying Coins! Lowest prices paid like everyone else, but at least we're honest." It was fun to talk with him. One incident that was enjoyable (to me at least) was when someone came over and asked to see a PCGS MS65 buffalo. As John was taking it out, the guy just kept asking for the price... and John gave it to him. It was decent money, not overpriced or really even high for an MS65, but the coin was a NICE coin... before the guy gets it in his hand, he starts telling John that it's overpriced and he doesn't want it... the guy never looked at the coin. I told John he should have charged that $10 fee.

Haven't been able to make it out to Joisy for some time now - but glad you all had a dandy!

<< <i>Oh... Andy Lustig was also there, along with Aki, his furry icon As he said, Andy actually brought a bag of bagels with him, and as requested, offered me one (stupid me, ate before I got there). But I did get to pet his cute little doggy (as requested, too) and even hold the canine's leash while Andy wrote a check! Unfortunately, the check was not written to me, which was yet another one of my requests

I look forward to (hopfully) meeting Andy at FUN... unfortunately, he has imformed me Aki will not be attending...

That's great!
It sounds like everyone had a good time. I wish I lived in a place that had a monthly coin show.
