Would you send these in?

The tan areas on the 1921 are not on the coin. I suspect these are reflections of some sort as the coin is highly reflective. The large marks on the 1923-D on the lower obverse (through the "1") and upper reverse (through "Pluribus") are die cracks. How would you grade these? Are they slab worthy?

Your 1921 is polished, and would not grade at PCGS or NGC.

It's likely AU details, net VF or so.

the 1923D appears to be an ok coin, at MS60 or 61 (although the obverse is nicer, those reverse marks will detract)

  • The 23 looks like a nice strike - but I don't think it would make it past 64. The first reaction I had on the 21 was that it was cleaned. As such, I'd vote no slabbing.

The 1921 looks circulated and cleaned and is not worth trying to get into a holder.

If the 1923-D grades MS63 or better, it is worth getting certified (if you can do so inexpensively). My best guess (and that's all we can do with images), is that it does have a decent shot at an MS63. Keep in mind that the obverse (which looks pretty nice on the 23-D) is more important than the reverse, in the grading equation.

Neither coin is worth sending in. The 1921 is cleaned and circulated as has been pointed out. Would be body bagged but you will still have to pay a grading fee. The '23-D would most likely find its way into a slab but look at the cost to you to do this vs. the market value of the coin. It's not economically feasible for you to send in the '23-D for slabbing is my opinion.

If you don't care about the economic feasibility of slabbing or attempting to slab your coins, fine. USPS and PCGS really would like your business, however. image

  • Thanks for that feedback. I've had my suspicions about the 21 for a while. My wife bought it for me about 4 Christmases ago. Definitely no luster which became very apparent when I compared pics with the 23D. Also what you can't see in the pic is that there are many many small marks...perhaps due to whizzing or a polishing device? I'll have to think about the 23D. I think it would go 63 but probably not higher.
