Opinions please on cross overs - ANACS to PCGS - Barber Halves:

I have recently purchased a very choice almost uncirculated Barber half dollar graded by ANACS AU 55 - not a net graded coin - just a very choice AU coin. Would it be a wise idea to crack it out of its holder and submit it raw to PCGS - as it came out of a major collection ( Pryor collection in 1996 ) and was designated as an AU 58 by David Bowers and Ray Merena - when it was owned by Dave & Ray. I could submit this coin along with the copy of the auction pages description of this coin and hope to get the AU 58 grade Dave & Ray gave it ...or is it wiser to just submit the coin in its ANACS AU 55 holder ?
Please bear in mind that this coin is the 1892-O - Micro O.
The coin is a premium AU coin, regardless of its rarity.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO ?????

as i am assuming it is at least an au55 and possibly higher
and with no chance of downgrade the worst that can happen is it is DNC and if so then i would break it out and send it in raw

I have some ideas, and have sent a PM

Mike, that very well might help you get the coin pedigreed, but it would have no impact on PCGS's grading of the coin.
Be careful about any PM's from Dale, too.
I take back what I said about Mark in the recent PM. He appears to be getting up there in age--more grumpy, less flattering towards others.
They were still minting Walking Liberty Half Dollars when I was born !
The consensus of opinions seem to be to submit the micro O in its ANACS holder. That seems the prudent thing to do. I also plan on having this coin with me at the FUN convention and being at the PCGS table with my raw and other TPG Barber halves for cross over and grading.
I seriously think I'll be spending more with PCGS than I'll be spending at the different auctions and on the bourse floor ...
MY SLQ set also goes in to PCGS for regrade and pedigree designation. This set is still in revision as there are about six upgrades I'd like to have. Having recently heard that a certain collection is being brought into the market in the near future, I know that I will have some serious gems to contemplate.

since rick montgomery left pcgs i have seen the gradeflation factor at pcgs increase a little at pcgs....however at ngc i have seen it slowed thus closing the gap between the two... i knew this could happen....as rick has put on the brakes.....if it continues the two might cross each other....in fact it already has started on some coins....i now see more and more coins bidding higher in ngc slabs than pcgs slabs....
last week i received 2 pcgs coins back ( monsters ) that ngc wont cross...and have been told this happened to them by some other collectors
whats up with that???
is anyone one else seeing this

I just received 7 coins back from NGC that were sent in PCGS holders 3 did not cross.
The worst part is I expected two of them to upgrade.

i expected some upgrades too...and was disappointed...but ..i am glad to see the pcgs "edge" has disapeared....people ( myself included ) have been saying for a long time buy the coin not the plastic ...and that is still ( and always will be ) in vogue.....
personally i loved it when i could buy a great coin cheaper because of what hoder its in.........however that window is closing fast if it already hasnt been closed...
which brings me to the most important point....
those that buy only one service`s coins cant possibly compete with those that do!!!!!

Only if you have removed the blinders. Not you of course, but those that haven't seen what is happening. Recently graded (within the past year) coins in NGC holders are still bargains as most folks here are still in denial. In another post I commented that one of these things that I have seen change on this board over the few years that I have been here is that some once former diehard PCGS only collectors are buying NGC coins and submitting to them. I wonder why?

you hit the nail on the head.....but in balt i was told i has to cross this seated half in ngc pr 66....to get the proper attention for it from the pcgs registry guys....i said what!!!!!!!!!
well i did.....it crossed 66 cam ( pop 2 now ) ....and before i could offer it to a registry guy in tennensse...an upgrader offered me 750 more than i was going to ask
now the registry guys who dont buy ngc coins might get a shot at it in a 67 cam holder ( pop 1 and 1 at 66 cam )
i could give numerous examples of how foolish buying only one services coins is.....but i like to remember davod schweitz buying that ngc holdered cleveland in 66....for 20 times bid.....now its in a pcgs 68 holder and the price is 50 times bid...btw he was offered 40 times bid for it

excellent summary monsterman!!!! and totally true
i have noticed this the last year or so
now there have always been great solid for the grade to undergraded fantastic eye appealling coins in all ngc coins graded since their inception but i have seen the last year or so both services pcgs/ngc are no better or worse than the other overall
for me buy the coin not the holder and i love great monsters in ngc holders as they are less expensive
lets see same coin same grade both superb eye appeal different holder different prices hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
