Crossovers, PCGS to NGC. Why and When??

I remember reading a thread on here about crossovers. Usually its another grading service crack out being reslabbed by PCGS. But I remember one forum member who said he lost a grade on his PCGS to NGC crossover. Afterwards I thought, why would you do this in the first place??? And when would such a crossover be beneficial??? Thoughts anyone??image

He probably thought it would upgrade at NGC. It'd generally be worth more if that were the case. Depends on the date.

    David,
From what I see for realized prices on ebay at least in the Lincoln series (My Little World!) it seems that NGC coins realize a grade less in price anyways. Perhaps thats not true in the other series or higher end stuff.

  • Maybe he was going to sell it to someone that was going to look at the coin and not the name on the plastic!!image
  • I've crossed many of my toned Peace $ to NGC. I hate the PCGS slabs for toners and I think the NGC slab is more attractive for toned coins. I will not keep a toned Peace $ in PCGS plastic. Some coins have upgraded, some have remained the same and some have downgraded.

Since grade has little to do with the final price of nicely toned Peace $ I really didn't care. And since they are all between 63-65 its not as though there was a lot of $$$$ at stake.

Go to the set registry at NGC at look at the top rated commem set. Its been put together by one of the sharpest collectors out there. This should start you thinking. Pay attention to what he has to say on these boards too, there are some real nuggets of information.

  • For a toned Morgan I prefer the NCG holder to show the color contast to better advantage. Because Peace

Dollars generally bring a premium, or are easier to sell in PCGS, they stay there. Unless they are nicely toned. I also

like to * that some prettier toners get at NGC. The exception to this is a true Morgan DMPL gem that's also toned, where the

monster money tends to be bid for PCGS over NGC material. The increase liquidity in the event of a trade is important to me.

I have noticed on many occasions that NGC 66's sell for more than PCGS 65's. Yet NGC 66's sell for alot less than PCGS 66's. Cracking out a PCGS to cross over to NGC at this grade point ( or any other grade/for/upgrade point for that matter ) would result in a slight amount of profit to the cross over owner.

Now that this little "secret " is out, I guess more cross overs to NGC from PCGS will be attemped.

I guess there are some who only deal in coins for a livihood make a decent living doing just this !
