A numismatic resolution for 2005!

1. I am declaring a coin buying moratorium for January 2005, I will not buy any coins during this month. This will give me the time to sell the extra coins that have been building up.

2. I will find a BU Spade Guinea that I like and buy it this year.

3. I will spend less time on the Open Forum and more time on the Darkside.

4. I will get the "British Coin Gallery" page of my website updated by 31 January 05.

If you are in the Western North Carolina area, please consider visiting our coin shop:

    1. Another coin will not be purchased on eBay for atleast 36 hours.

    2. A Gothic Florin (that I can afford and like) is on the hit list.

    3. Try somehow to arrange the 200+ World Coins I have so they can be found easily. (This should be #1)

    4. Lurk more around this forum and less on the US Coin Forum.

    1. I will stop buying mint and proof sets post 1970.

    2. I will sell as many of my duplicates as possible - I just don't have enough room for them anymore.

    3. I will cut out all impulse buys. Only carefully thought out purchases will be allowed. I will remain focused in my collecting area. For example, no more South Africa coins for me for the moment.

    4. I will restart my "Brit Tips" series after a long hiatus (this may be tough to keep).

    5. I will not buy from online sellers who sell cleaned/hairlined coins not described as such.

    6. I will annoy ajaan and farthing as much as possible, especially if their beloved Gunners fail to repeat.image

(Edited to add farthing to the list because he appeared to be offended)

    1. I will sell off my numismatic whims from bids boards and eBay that only looked good because they appeared to be bargains.

    2. I will focus on my collection of George V commonwealth shillings, florins, half crowns and crowns instead of starting a new collection.

    3. I will get a caliper so I can measure said coins and plan a custom Dansco album.

    4. I will remodel my house so my office will hold all the coin books and related supplies currently piled here and there.

I will find the black hole on my desk and retrieve all lost coins.

(Maybe I should just clean the top of the desk. Ya think?)
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

  • 1. I will only purchase 1-2 Greek coins this year if found, both from the early 1828-1831 Governor Kapodistrias area, perhaps the most interesting area of modern Greek numismatics and of which I only have the silver phoenix. There's about a dozen of type copper coins that I need, all extremely rare to impossible in unc with the slightest trace of luster. Here's what one of the most interesting and knowledgeable US-Greek collectors that I know said in another forum, about a coin on which I was recently outbid:

<<I bought Lot 615 1 L 1828 for **** SF. I am a little (well maybe a lot) crazy about the die varieties of Kapodistrias. This particular variety is known as a cast counterfeit and in 25 years of looking at die varieties and die combinations, I have never seen this one before. It is extremely rare. I supected it existed since there was a counterfeit of the same dies. I hoped that no one would bid on it thinking it was counterfeit. I had confimed it was genuine. Apparently someone else wanted it too. I do not have the coin yet, but I am told that it has some mint red*. Even at that price, I am pleased with my purchase.

Someday collectors will realize that each variety of the Kapodistrian coins is a separate and different coin. They will be collected just like the copper large cents of the US; that is, by variety. These coins are true Greek coins. As my friend pointed out to me the coins of Othon and George are not really Greek coins and besides their designs are not very artistic. For the most part they are coins made in Munich, Paris and other European Mints. The coins of Kapodistrias were struck in Greece, by Greeks, and are much more artistic.>>

    *sigh

    2. I will fight the cravings to bid on JamminJ's Arab copper coins. I'll kick this bad habit ,I know I can. image

A numismatic resolution...sounds like a good idea only because other resolutions really are not all that fun and usually impossible to keep.image

1.Finish my AU/BU 1928 Irish date set (need a florin).

2.This month will be busy as we closed on the house 30 Dec. So now the energy will be in painting, touch ups and moving.

3.Think before I buy and try to stay within one or two areas of collecting instead of bouncing all over the place.

4.Wondering if I should hold on to my former proof Ike registry set ( I retired the set last month).

5.Stay the HECK out of that open forum!

    1. Remind Wybrit that Chelsea hasn't won the cup yet!
    2. Complete my 1901-1967 English type set (non-gold, non-maundy, non-Edward VIII). I've been lacking the same 4 coins for the last 2 years - a Edward VII half crown (must be at least F), Low Tide 1/2d and 1d, and the modified effigy Shilling (1926-27)
    3. Pick up whatever Conder tokens are available after Bill has has his way with them. image

Farthing, I'll have to add your name to item #6! Sorry for the omission.image

  • I came up with two more:

    1) Never, EVER, accept an early offer on a very hot coin that I'm selling unless I'm sure about its CURRENT market value. About three months ago, I listed a very rare Greek coin on ebay. After less than 24hrs ,the coin (ANACS AU58) had already reached almost twice its Krause unc value and had hit 100+ views.Out of the many emails that I received to end the listing early and sell the coin privately, I chose one from a person that I knew, who made me an open offer. He really needed this coin so he asked me to name my price! image Taken by surprise I decided that an amount around 5 times the Krause unc value, in cash, would be fair to both of us. Considering that I'd bought this coin 5 years ago for less than 8% of what I was now asking , I thought I really did OK. Actually, the buyer got one of the best bargains ever, and certainly his personal best. As I found out later, that coin was worth at least twice the amount I got.

    2) Never place many absentee bids to a live auction , but instead concentrate the budget on one or two very strong bids in order to have a chance of winning something, even if the price seems outrageous initially, provided of course that the item is really rare. I already knew that well, and yet I fell into the trap twice this year, missing my chance to buy a couple of very rare gem proof Ionian coins.
