1944-D Lincoln Is this D/S?

badgerbadger Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭
This 1944 Lincoln's mint mark looks strange. There are extra points at the top of the D. The bottom half of the D is flat. Is this a D/D or D/S? I need help from the experts.

I see a hint of a serif on the northeast corner, but not enough to say it's a D/S. The weakness on the bottom of the MM is fairly common and I'd guess it's just a weak strike as opposed to a D/S. This is just MHO and I too will be interested in the opinions of those who know more about this variety than I do.

Here is another angle. I think I can see extra bits, but I assume this is how we spotted UFOs in the desert from satellite photos.

    Badger,

I dont think it is. Sorry dude.

Btw... what ever happened to those 1950 proofs. Did that coin ever come in that you were looking for?

It is not a D/S. The OMM you are looking for has an obvious upper loop above the D. It would easily be visible with a 5X loupe no matter what the coin grades, from VF through MS.

Just checked it against an OMM-2 I have on my desk...also not a match from what I see; although MM placement of the D is nearly identical.

Thanks for the help. This was part of a purchase of MS Linc and Jeffs as a collection. Thought I might have lucked out.

Hey Badger, awsome pic, is that with a QX-3 microscope? Or do you have one hell of a macro lense?

    Tom,

Used a Canon G2 Powershot 4.0 Mega Pixel camera with their standard macro lense and polarizing filter.

Lighting was from indoor flood lights (in the breakfast room) with white balance corrected for incandescent light.

Coin was about 1.5" away from camera and used 10X zoom feature. Coin was on a fixture that was tilted about 45 degrees from light source. Timer release on shutter and tripod have to be used because any vibration blurs the photo.

Set in Manual Mode at F 8.0 and varied the exposure time +/- one shutter speed to bracket the exposure from what appeared to be an acceptable shot in the viewer.

Downloaded into Microsoft Photo Editor and enlarged about 40%, Can go to 65% enlargement before the pic gets too grainy.

Key is having enough pixels to enlarge photo in the editor. For annotation, imported into PowerPoint, text added, then exported as jpeg format.

Seems like a lot of steps, but is not bad once you get into the habit.

On a very limited, infrequent basis, yes...perhaps once per week, if that.
