Need help with Mint Mark.....1912 Dor S

I really am looking for a opinion on this mint mark...I took it to my local coin club and let 3 people take a look at it.. 2 out of 3 said it was a S for sure....the other guy said he had a hard time coming to a conclusion.....So what do I do I go and buy a microscope

Smells like doctored. Could be a D or an S. Nicodate?

The serifs make it look like an S. But it still looks too much like a blob. It could even be a D altered to look like an S.

My immediate impression was S. But the longer I look at it, the more unsure I become.

Looks like an S to me. What coin is it? There may be other diagnostics you could use to help you determine which it is. For example, 1912-S nickels usually have a bit of a lump on the obverse near the neck, and some of them have a die crack about four denticles from the mintmark like this:
