Please Grade the raw Morgan Dollar-1890-o

Can anyone tell me what this 1890-o Morgan dollar might grade. It does have luster but the hair above the ear is worn. I think it's an AU55. What do you grade her?

  • There is no wear that I can see in the hair above the ear or the eagles breast---that's the way almost all of em are. The eagles wings look Ok but theres some abrasion above the eye. Hard to tell from the color picture --could be anything from
AU-58 (higher end) to MS-64 uncirculated. Black and white picts show wear better, and the slight toning change at the high points
(if there is any on this example). Nice coin regardless.image

Probably AU-58 based upon possible wear on the eagle's breast -- definitely a slider which may look mint state with more revealing lighting.

    Pretty looking coin!

I was say an easy 60+...not much wear just a weak strike...which is common for that year. I have a 64 morgan in a holder that has a weaker strike than yours...image

Typical O-mint strike. Most (all?) of what you're seeing is a weak strike, not wear. It's probably either AU-58 or MS-63ish, depending on whether or not there are luster breaks on the high points.

Very hard to tell with that image, as others have said it is either an AU58 or a MS63. You can't go by the hair above the ear, this date was notoriously weakly struck.

One thing you want to look for on this coin is if it has two raised lines extending from the rim between the 0 in the date and the first star on the right. Does your coin look like this?

the coin could indeed be mint state, tough to tell from the photos, need some more light and a "tilt" to see if the color of the highpoints is a darker, duller grey. Weak strike is typical, as others have said, and the coin appears to have nice luster in the fields, not the tiny dings and lines and greying of an AU coin.

I'll say AU58 minimum, could be as high as MS62 (but I think not higher, as the face does have contacts and frictions.) I would value it a "60" and not specify whether it's AU or MS image

No, I checked the coin and it doesn't have any raised lines from the 0 of the date to the star. Is that a VAM your talking about?

Yes, the one I showed is a VAM 10 Comet, and they go for a nice premium above sheet.
