i have no "search" box in the upper right corner.. i have a "search" BUTTON, and an "Advanced" search LINK, but no box to enter a item # or name in..

No problem like that. Did you try turning off your ad blocker? I'm missing 2 buttons (logoff/login button and another button) above the "buy, sell, my ebay, community and help buttons". I found out it was due to my pop up ad blocker (in my norton firewall) and ebay live help won't pop up either with the ad blocker on.

Sometimes I get the "not responding or no cookies" page message. They're probably doing something when you did the search.

Is that the same computer you saw the whack text on Vargha's auction? I noticed the same thing, although I'm not at that PC anymore, so I can't assist in troubleshooting, but the two would seem to be related. BTW, if you click on that lone Search button, you will go to the general search page, which does give you a proper line to put your search criteria in.
