PCGS grading higher than NGC!

I just received two coins back from PCGS. Both were cracked out of NGC holders about three years ago. One is a proof 1883 indian head penny. The other is a proof 1871- 3 cent nickel. NGC graded the penny PR63, and the 3-cent as PR62. PCGS graded both PR65. you can see both here: [L]http://www.pbase.com/stev32k/coins[/L]

Penny: 21811731
3-cent: 21811732

A proof 62 going to 65, hmmm that is difficult to comprehend.
  • On many Morgans PCGS is a little easier, especially if the luster/eye appeal is outstanding. I think that they are very strict on all PL's and DMPL's as well as any coin where there's a big value increase to the next level involving 5 or 10 thousand bucks.

Nothing surprising, there are many undergraded coins in NGC holders. I own some and sure that a lot of you do also.

Actually, I recieved an 1864-L indian back today graded Ngc-10, it should have holdered at F-12 minimum. In fact, had it went to PCGS, I think it would have had a shot at F-15, but definitely a f-12.

I haven't seen that on Washington's. NGC seems to be much more liberal when grading Washingtons.

    Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.

Thanks Michael. The half-cent and two-cent were both bagged by PCGS for cleaning. I knew the half-cent had been cleaned, but the two-cent was a surprise. I've owned that one for over 30 years and it's been in a capital plastic holder all that time. So if it was cleaned it was over thirty years ago.

The 1883 proof indian is a weak strike (only two of the four diamonds on the headress ribbon show up) and I didn't think it had a chance of making PR65. I'm not complaining I just think its a little strange.

  • That's another reason why I like ICG grading so much. Very consistent. I also like the fact the graders are independent in the sense a submission goes to third party first so the grader does not know the submitting party. Not knowing the submitting party is of huge importance.
