Question on Morgan grade

A question for any of the Morgan experts, or anyone who has a handle on grading. I am looking to submit this 1880-S, and not really sure what to expect. The cheek has a little chatter but nothing obnoxious or detracting. The fields seem to be clean and somewhat mirrored on both Obv and Rev with a frosty look, good eye appeal (at least to me). Also, this will be my first submission.......

Thanks for any input.

If the picture is pretty true to its look, then perhaps ms64 or ms65.... image

  • 64; donot think it will go 65. Probably the photography, but the appearance is "monolithic", bordering on a dipped piece. If a 64, don't waste money, not worth the price of submission. The jump comes at 65. I donot see the frost, but again, yhat could be the photography.

That is not going to grade higher than 64. With the new fees of $18 a coin plus shipping both ways, it's not a coin that is worth it in my opinion.
  • correct "yhat to "that". For the English major buffs, and so that I donot offend anybody with the family name "yhat".

I agree with the MS64 thoughts.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Thanks for all the info. I purchased both this 1880-S and a 1902-O at a show at the same time in either 1989 or 1990, don’t recall which one. So I can say for certain that it has not been dipped nor had anything else done to it besides sit in a 2x2 since then. However, before that who knows. I don’t recall if the dealer was local or not so it would be difficult to trace back the history and find out. I think I paid like $20 - $25 for the two. So, if they sit in their 2x2 for a few more years, I guess no harm done.

    Again, Thanks

Well, you did very nice then. At this point, I think keeping it in a 2x2 is the way to go.

    By the way, welcome.
