1899 $5 Liberty Gold Breen 6769 Re-punched date...Info Please

Had someone in the shop wanted to know about this coin. It is certified PCGS MS61 and according to the fellow he bought it from it is a Breen 6769 which is a repunched date, especially at the two 9s. So I look and sure enough you can clearly see two extra loops by the 9s...pretty cool I thought.

The fellow wanted to know the approximate value but I could not tell him, the only thing I know is that Breen's book says it is rare.

Just how rare is it and please help with an approximate value...maybe a wholesale and retail if possible.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am no expert, but gold varieties, even in areas that are actively collected (Dahlonega, Carson City, etc.) that are not Redbook varieties and not separately listed in CoinValues or pop reports rarely if ever trade for a premium. The coin is a common date, and I would not pay any more than publsihed prices for the 1899.

    Edited to add:

In Breen's monograph, Varieties of United States Half Eagles, p. 40, under the heading 1899:

"Mintage 1,710,630 plus 99 proofs. Variations are trivial."
  • Thank you for the help. I'll pass on the info.
