Removing scratches from card holders

A few days ago I read in someone's comment about removing scratches from graded card holders. They said that automotive rubbing compound also works. Today I experimented with some old card cases that I had cracked open and had not thrown away yet.

I tried regular rubbing compound and found it did take out the scratch I wanted to remove, but left some other marks that I did not like. I then tried a microfinishing compound (I have a bottle of Imperial brand on hand). That did a good job of removing the fairly deep scratches and leaving a decent looking result. There were some swirl marks I wanted to get rid of if possible. I then tried some Meguiar's Swirl Remover. I have to say I am pleased with the results. There are some microscopic swirl marks, but not very noticable. There is a major difference between the scratches I started with and the final result.

Anyone else have any methods of removing scratches that work?

  • I bet you would not notice the old scratches at all.

get ahold of airplanenut on the coin boards. he used to sell some stuff called "Scratch Away" for the coin slabs. It is supposed to work wonders. I have a bottle but have never used it.
