Brasher gold with punch on breast

krankykranky Posts: 8,709 ✭✭✭
I'm at a loss to understand why the "unique" example that has the punch on the breast is any big deal compared to the other Brasher examples. What are there - six known Brasher pieces total? Does the placement of the punch really matter at all?

No question they are rare and desirable coins, but I've always thought the extra helping of hype for the "unique" punch on breast example was a bit over the top. Does the placement of counterstamps matter for any other coins?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    I agree!

There are many different placement of counterstamps on coins.

The dies for both of these coins seem exactly the same to me.

Are there any colonial experts that have any further thoughts??

I just read the catalog last night. It's a very rare coin. 'Nuff said.

I think it's assumed to be a different animal becase Garrett had them both. Otherwise, yea I only need one. I'd have to have the 1/2 doubloon though.

It's an aesthetic thing and it definitely matters. Think about it. How much less impressive would the big "S" be if Superman had it tattooed on his arm instead of emblazoned on his chest?

  • If I had the money to spend, the one with the punch on the breast is the one i would want. It`s like saying, Whats the difference between a 1916 and a 1916-d merc dime? It`s just a mark. That`s just my opinion.

BTW, it wouldn't surprise me if Garrett decided he needed both examples for a reason other than the location of the EB punch. When you view the coins - if you can view the coins - compare the differences in the detail of the waves on the two coins.
